They accused Rockstar of firing people for wanting to fight for their rights. GTA 6 devs break their silence

Recently, Rockstar Games faced criticism from a union following job cuts, but the team behind Grand Theft Auto has offered a convincing explanation for why those positions were eliminated.

While 30 or 40 job losses seem small compared to the large layoffs at companies like Microsoft and Amazon, it doesn’t make the recent job losses at Rockstar Games any easier for those affected.

So, this whole thing that Bloomberg reported really blew up, and honestly, it’s kind of messed up. It turns out a lot of the people who got laid off were either already in a union or were talking about forming one. Rockstar is saying it was due to “serious wrongdoing,” but a lot of us gamers aren’t buying it, you know? It just feels… suspicious.

Employee indiscretion or a pretext for Rockstar?

Okay, so I’m seeing some drama brewing. Apparently, the IWGB – a UK workers’ union – is protesting Rockstar and Take-Two Interactive’s London offices right now. I saw the news pop up on X (formerly Twitter) from @videotechuk. It looks like they’re not thrilled with something, and are making their voices heard!

The company previously stated that Rockstar’s actions were intended to prevent employees from forming unions and advocating for better working conditions. This explanation gained traction, with many hoping those impacted would be rehired. Unfortunately, a return to their jobs seems unlikely.

Rockstar Games responded to recent layoff reports today, clarifying that the dismissals weren’t related to union activity. According to Bloomberg, the company stated that those let go had shared confidential information publicly, and this – not any union issues – was the reason for the layoffs, which affected a small number of employees.

Last week, we addressed a situation where a few people shared private company information publicly, which goes against our policies. This issue was completely separate from any employee’s right to consider or participate in union activities.

While not everyone accepted that explanation, Rockstar is well-known for having very strict secrecy policies. It’s likely the employees involved may have accidentally revealed some information – even if it wasn’t about the games themselves – and therefore violated their non-disclosure agreement.

Rockstar Games suffered a major data leak in 2022, and another, smaller leak occurred just last month. It’s unclear if the recent leak was connected to the company’s recent layoffs, if developers accidentally shared confidential information, or if something else entirely is going on. As of now, there are no definitive answers.
