Lego unveiled its innovative Smart Play system at CES 2026. These aren’t your average Lego bricks! The new system includes pieces with built-in sensors, movement detectors, lights, sound capabilities, and even a small speaker that can create music. Lego explains that these smart pieces work together to make building and playing more interactive. The first sets, featuring characters from Star Wars, will be released in March and can be pre-ordered starting January 9th.
Lego has used electronics in its sets before, but the new Smart Play pieces are different. They can sense special NFC tags nearby and don’t need batteries – they charge wirelessly. That’s a step up from Lego Super Mario, which relied on AAA batteries.
These new Lego pieces are designed to work with your existing Lego bricks. Each one contains a tiny, custom chip – smaller than the bumps on top of Lego bricks. What do these chips do? Lego explains that the “Smart Bricks” will react to movements and actions with sounds and programmed behaviors. Let’s take a look at how this will work, starting with the new Lego Star Wars sets that will be the first to use this technology.
Lego Star Wars: Darth Vader’s TIE Fighter (473 pieces) — $70
The Darth Vader spaceship set includes a special Darth Vader Lego minifigure and a Lego Smart Brick. The set features sound effects – you can actually hear the spaceship’s engines! It also comes with a Rebel Fleet Trooper minifigure, a small Rebel Outpost, and an Imperial Fueling Station to complete the scene.
Lego Star Wars: Throne Room Duel and A-Wing (962 pieces) — $160
This set lets fans recreate the epic final battle between Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader from Return of the Jedi. It’s packed with sound effects, including lightsaber clashes and A-Wing engines, but the real highlight is Emperor Palpatine! When you place his minifigure on the throne, you’ll hear the iconic Imperial March play. The set includes a buildable A-Wing Fighter with a pilot, two Royal Guard minifigures, and a cannon turret that connects to a Smart Tag, allowing you to defend the Emperor’s Throne Room.
Lego Star Wars: Luke’s Red Five X-wing (584 pieces) — $100
This Lego set lets you build Luke Skywalker’s famous X-Wing fighter and includes Luke and Leia minifigures. It also features cool sound effects – like lasers, engine noises, and even sounds for refueling and repairs – thanks to Lego Smart pieces. Plus, you can build extra structures like an Imperial turret, transporter, command center, and a model of R2-D2.
The latest Lego sets featuring Smart Bricks aren’t available just yet, but you can explore all the new sets released at the beginning of 2026. Highlights include sets commemorating 25 years of Harry Potter, a replica of a classic three-in-one retro gaming console, and the popular Ninjago Legacy 15th Anniversary sets, which are still in stock at Amazon.
