As a gamer who’s been following the Yellowstone saga since its inception, I can’t help but feel a twinge of nostalgia when it comes to the ’90s era of the Dutton family. The flashbacks have always been my favorite part, offering a tantalizing glimpse into the lives of our beloved characters before they became the hardened individuals we know today.
As the final episodes of “Yellowstone” approach, the chronology of the Dutton family expands – however, viewers are eager for a time period they’ve only caught glimpses of so far, and it seems that creator Taylor Sheridan may be planning to delve deeper into it.
Across Yellowstone, the series offers peeks at the daily life of the Dutton clan during the 1990s. John Dutton, portrayed by Josh Lucas in flashback scenes, persistently employs questionable tactics to shield their family ranch from harm.
Simultaneously, the younger Dutton siblings are creating chaos while growing up, and rivalry between Beth and Jamie escalates to last throughout their lifetimes. Flashbacks also show us glimpses of young Rip and Lloyd, offering insights into the ranch’s earlier days.
Previously introduced spin-offs, 1883 and 1923 (with 1944 in the works), delve into earlier chapters of the Yellowstone saga. However, due to Taylor Sheridan’s flashbacks set in the ’90s, viewers now crave more from that era. As Yellowstone approaches its final stretch with Season 5 Part 2, some speculate there may be additional tales to tell.
Yellowstone fans want a spinoff set in the ’90s
One user on the show’s subreddit expressed their desire for a spinoff, saying, “Who else is interested in a series set in the ’90s??” They suggested continuing the pattern of titles with years and proposed, “If they keep that trend going, let’s call it 1993.
They’re fine with choosing actors for the flashback scenes who portray young Jamie, Beth, Lee, and Kayce. Additionally, they are excited about Josh Lucas playing John and [her name] as Evelyn. I am eager to learn more about Lloyd’s past.
Rip probably hasn’t appeared yet because his plotline comes later, as far as I understand. It seems like we might need a shift or leap in the timeline to include him. That would be after Evelyn’s death.
A different user commented: “This looks great! It’d be fascinating to explore the past of our familiar characters, especially their childhood years and the relationships they built. I’m curious about how Kayce ended up leaving the ranch and joining the navy, and how Lynelle became close to John. Essentially, we’d delve into the stories that were unfolding during that time.
As the Dutton universe continues to grow (with whispers of Season 6 persisting), it’s not out of the question that a ’90s spinoff could materialize. Josh Lucas, who portrays the younger John Dutton, has previously expressed interest in his own series, and let me tell you, he’s definitely on board with the idea.
Earlier this year, Lucas expressed that he appreciates it when people inquire about him playing the young John Dutton or a prequel series. He’s building his approach around what Kevin has already accomplished, but he also finds the idea of delving deeper into that world incredibly appealing.
There are currently three Yellowstone spinoffs in development: 1944, The Madison, and 6666.
