There’s a secret remake of one of Tom Cruise’s best movies

Tom Cruise is arguably the world’s biggest movie star, and a fan favorite film of his recently got a new version, though it didn’t receive much publicity.

Okay, so it sounds like Tom Cruise might be thinking about switching things up a bit. I mean, he’s been the guy doing all those Mission: Impossible movies for, like, ten years, and it feels like he just wrapped that up with ‘The Final Reckoning’ this summer. It’s kinda like finishing a really long game and wondering what adventure he’ll pick up next!

So, it looks like Tom Cruise is done running around as Ethan Hunt for a bit. He’s moving on to something a little heavier now – he’s working on a new movie with director Alejandro G. Inarritu, and it’s supposed to come out next October. Honestly, as a gamer, I’m always curious to see what actors do when they step away from big action roles – it’s cool to see them try different things!

One of his most popular films is being remade and has been quietly previewing at film festivals in 2025.

Edge of Tomorrow has been remade as All You Need is Kill

Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s light novel, All You Need is Kill, originally came out in Japan in 2004. Ten years later, it was adapted into the film Edge of Tomorrow, directed by Doug Liman and starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt.

The movie centers on a soldier stuck in a time loop as he fights to protect Earth from an alien invasion. It was a major success, earning $370 million globally, and has sparked ongoing discussions about a potential follow-up with the original cast.

Before a sequel to Edge of Tomorrow is made, the original story has been adapted into an animated movie. Kenichiro Akimoto is directing, and Natsuki Hanae and Ai Mikami, both known for their work on Demon Slayer and Dan Da Dan, are providing the voices for the characters previously played by Tom Cruise and the lead female character, Rita.

Rita finds herself stuck in a time loop, reliving the same day over and over again while an alien plant invasion is happening. Through countless deaths, she becomes a highly trained fighter. Eventually, she meets Keiji, who is also caught in the time loop.

What the critics are saying

The movie All You Need is Kill premiered at the Fantasia and Annecy film festivals, and critics have mostly reacted favorably to it.

Fandom Wire praised the show’s stunning visuals, noting that its dreamlike and captivating designs fully immerse you in the sci-fi setting. They even said some of the images were beautiful enough to hang in an art museum.

Screen Anarchy praised the action scenes, noting that they became more elaborate and impressive as Rita gained a better understanding of her opponents.

Anime News Network says the film is enjoyable despite being similar to other works. It stands out because of its dreamlike visuals, particularly in how it depicts the connection between the alien invasion and the main character’s thoughts, and in the strange changes to the Earth caused by the aliens’ arrival.

IGN criticized the movie’s ending, stating that it rushed the final act and nearly ruined the whole film. They felt the story jumped ahead too quickly, delivering a climax with little build-up and some confusing, out-of-nowhere plot twists.

Even more problematic, the new direction the story takes completely sidelines Rita, who has been our main connection to the events up until this point, turning her into someone who just watches things happen.

The Wrap praised the film’s ending, even suggesting it’s better than the climax of a Tom Cruise movie. They noted that despite some pacing issues in the final act – similar to those in ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ – the movie’s emotional core makes the ending powerfully moving.

While “All You Need is Kill” doesn’t have a confirmed release date, it’s currently expected to be released in 2026. Until then, you can find a list of the greatest animated movies of all time here.
