A little-known historical drama is unexpectedly gaining popularity. The show, based on and continuing the story from Jane Austen’s unfinished novel of the same name, has entered the Top 10 on Amazon Prime Video.
Currently, the show Sanditon is doing very well on Amazon. According to FlixPatrol, it’s ranked at No. 8 in the Top TV Shows for purchase or rental, even beating out popular series like Grey’s Anatomy, South Park, and Boston Blue. Based on Jane Austen’s unfinished novel and developed by Andrew Davies, the first episode covers the complete original manuscript. The remaining seven episodes of the first season expand on Austen’s story, which is set in Regency-era England and follows a young woman experiencing the new seaside town of Sanditon.
Rose Williams stars as Charlotte Heywood in Sanditon. The main cast also includes Kate Ashfield as Mary Parker, Crystal Clarke as Georgiana Lambe, Turlough Convery as Arthur Parker, Jack Fox as Sir Edward Denham, Kris Marshall as Tom Parker, Anne Reid as Lady Denham, Lily Sacofsky as Clara Brereton, and Charlotte Spencer as Esther, Lady Babington née Denham. Theo James was a regular in the first season, playing Sidney Parker, but he didn’t return for seasons two and three after PBS and Britbox renewed the show in May 2021.
James shared that while he enjoyed playing Sidney, he feels the character’s story ended on the right note. He described the bittersweet ending between Sidney and Charlotte as distinctive and compelling, and wished the entire Sanditon team all the best for future seasons.
What Has Theo James Been Up to Since Sanditon?
James first became known for his role as Kemal Pamuk in the first season of Downton Abbey, where he played a Turkish diplomat who tragically passed away. He then gained wider recognition playing Tobias Eaton in the Divergent films and David in two Underworld sequels. He also starred as the lead in the CBS series Golden Boy, though it didn’t last long. Before Sanditon, his most recent significant role was voicing the character Hector in Netflix’s animated series Castlevania.
I’ve been so impressed watching James’ career take off since Sanditon! He’s been amazing in The White Lotus Season 2 and X-Men ’97, and now he’s landed a lead role in The Gentlemen! I’m really excited to see him as Eddie Horniman, the new Duke of Halstead, who unexpectedly inherits not only his family’s estate but also a secret weed farm hidden underneath it. It’s a fantastic part, and I can’t wait for Season 2 – thankfully, we won’t have to wait too long with its planned 2026 return on Netflix!
Sanditon is available to rent or purchase on Amazon Prime Video and other PVOD platforms.
