The Yellow Card Man gets his name from the yellow playing card he keeps tucked into his hat. The card features an ouroboros – an old symbol of a snake forming a circle by eating its own tail. This image is often seen as representing the cycle of life and death, but it can also be understood as a symbol of time’s destructive power.
As Jake travels back in time repeatedly, the Yellow Card Man clearly becomes more unstable, both emotionally and mentally. By the series’ end, he’s lost touch with reality, appearing to have gone insane. Despite possessing strange abilities, he isn’t protected from the damaging effects of altering and breaking timelines.
The identity and purpose of the Yellow Card Man are never fully explained, but he serves as a visual representation of the harm Jake causes by altering the past. His declining health directly reflects the damage Jake is inflicting on the timeline, making the consequences impossible for Jake to overlook in 11.22.63.
