The X-Men’s Brutal Fight for the Future of Mutantkind is Now

The climactic battle against the Age of Revelation is here, and it’s happening about ten years sooner than expected.

A preview of Marvel’s X-Men #23 (from the creative team of Jed MacKay, Tony Daniel, Mark Morales, Fer Sifuentes-Sujo, and Clayton Cowles) shows the current X-Men in a routine meeting with Doug Ramsey, soon after he becomes Revelation. The meeting is quickly interrupted when Cyclops is suddenly possessed by his future self. This happens because someone needs to be prepared to stop Revelation and prevent a catastrophic future.

The latest issue of Marvel’s X-Men (#23) continues the story after the ‘Age of Revelation’ event. An X-Man is stuck in a future timeline, battling difficult challenges. Meanwhile, the story explores what their present-day self has been up to while their future counterpart was away.

The Marvel Comics event, Age of Revelation, has offered readers a look at what the Marvel Universe might be like about ten years from now. Executive Editor Tom Brevoort, who is leading the X-Men side of Marvel, has been sharing details, especially in the upcoming Shadows of Tomorrow story arc.

Looking ahead to January and beyond, future storylines will be heavily influenced by recent events. According to Brevoort, these aren’t alternate realities or ‘What If’ scenarios; they are genuine possibilities within the main timeline. Characters are aware of these diverging paths, and we’ll see how events reflect those choices and consequences.

The arrival of the Age of Revelation began with Doug Ramsey, formerly the New Mutant known as Cypher. After a dramatic change, the once-gentle hero became a powerful, imposing figure, able to control others with just a few words. Using his forces of Choristers and Seraphim, Revelation took control of most of North America, turning it into a strangely beautiful, but extremely dangerous, land.

X-Men writer Jed MacKay has hinted that the events currently happening in the ‘Revelation Territories’ and other areas will determine the future of the X-Men universe – whether it will lead to a new era or its ultimate conclusion. He also expressed excitement about seeing other writers and artists contribute to and expand upon the world he’s been building.

X-Men #23 goes on sale January 7 from Marvel Comics.
