“The Wretched” sequel is happening.
Five years following the initial screening of the movie, the Pierce brothers (Brett and Drew, known for “Deadheads”) along with Little Runway Productions, are set to commence filming “The Wretched 2” in Oregon this coming September. The casting process is already underway.
The Pierce brothers, who are coming back as writers, directors, and producers, expressed their thoughts to EbMaster in a statement, “Independent horror films have been making a mark at the box office over the past couple of years with movies like ‘Terrifier 3’ and ‘Late Night With the Devil’. Audiences are clamoring for more of these unique tales and creators. It feels like the perfect moment to resurrect our Witch character, as she emerged from our desire for something more from monster films that we weren’t finding elsewhere. We plan to take this narrative and body horror into unsettling territories.
In “The Wretched,” a movie penned and helmed by Brett and Drew Pierce, a young boy stumbles upon an ominous witch lurking in the surrounding woodlands. The upcoming sequel, “The Wretched 2,” will expand the storyline and the dread to encompass an entire town. In this new installment, a small-town law enforcement officer becomes embroiled in a series of child abductions. As he delves deeper, he uncovers that the shape-shifting creature known as The Wretch has returned, and for over a century, it has been tormenting the families residing within his community.
During an interview with EbMaster, Brett and Drew Pierce shared their inspiration behind the creature design in their work, which stemmed from Roald Dahl’s “The Witches.” Brett Pierce expressed, “As children, we were enamored with this book and the film that accompanied it. Our ambition was to create a chilling adult-oriented witch movie, something that was missing in the horror genre.” He further explained, “Most witches depicted in horror films are either ghostly figures or women practicing magic. We were captivated by mythology and delved into that for the design of our witch character.
The initial horror movie by the Pierce brothers, titled “The Wretched,” made its debut at the 2019 Fantasia International Film Festival. Later, during the pandemic, IFC Midnight distributed it for screening in drive-in theaters on May 1, 2020. Within a month of its release, the film’s revenue surpassed $1 million due to the buzz generated by drive-in movie theaters.
Additionally joining the production team are Chang Tseng, Ed Polgardy, and Travis Cultreri. Also contributing to this project is Kamikaze Productions.
The Pierce Brothers are writers/directors/producers for their Little Runway Productions.
The Pierce brothers are managed by The Gotham Group and the law firm Jackoway Austen Tyerman.
