‘The Witcher’ Season 5 Is Coming Sooner Than Expected

Fans have been eagerly awaiting news about the final season of The Witcher, and it looks like Netflix might release it sooner than anticipated. The showrunner revealed a month before Season 4’s October 30, 2025 debut that Season 5 was already filmed and the story’s conclusion was planned.

I have to admit, I’m a little worried about The Witcher now that Liam Hemsworth is taking over from Henry Cavill as Geralt. It really makes you wonder if even the most dedicated fans will stick around to see how the story ends. The show took a pretty big hit in quality between seasons 3 and 4 – no episode even managed a 4.4 on IMDb! Hopefully, with a new lead, they can turn things around and give us a fantastic finale. Here’s what I’ve found out about when and what to expect from Season 5.

‘The Witcher’s Showrunner Claims Season 5 Has Already Wrapped

Ahead of the Season 4 release, The Witcher‘s creator, Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, told IGN that Season 5 had already finished filming on September 30, 2025. This is unusual for most TV shows, which typically don’t complete a new season before the current one airs, but it’s great news for fans! Seasons 4 and 5 were shot consecutively, with the goal of creating a single, continuous story.

This news is especially exciting considering how long it usually takes to make a season of The Witcher. Seasons have typically been released two years apart – Season 1 in 2019, Season 2 in 2021, Season 3 in 2023, and Season 4 expected in 2025. Fans generally assumed Season 5 wouldn’t arrive until 2027, but since it’s already finished, it looks like they won’t have to wait that long to see how the story ends.

The Witcher Season Release Date
Season 1 Premiere December 20, 2019
Season 2 Premiere December 17, 2021
Season 3 Premiere June 29, 2023
Season 4 Premiere October 30, 2025
Season 5 Premiere Expected Fall 2026

While the creator, Hissrich, has promised exciting and unexpected twists in Season 5, these statements were made before the generally negative reaction to Season 4. Given that most viewers disliked the fourth season, it’s unclear how much enthusiasm remains for the show. Releasing Season 5 soon might be the best course of action, before interest in the series completely fades.

‘The Witcher’s Season 4 Took a Major Hit Among Fans

Netflix

Recent data from Redanian Intelligence shows that viewership for The Witcher Season 4 dropped significantly, with only 7.4 million viewers tuning in during its first four days. This is a considerable decrease from Season 2, which had 18.5 million viewers in just three days, and Season 3, which drew 15.2 million viewers in four days. While many assume the change in lead actors – Henry Cavill being replaced by Liam Hemsworth – is the sole reason, the situation is more complex than that.

While Liam Hemsworth doesn’t quite capture the same commanding presence as Henry Cavill as Geralt, many fans were disappointed by other changes in Season 4. The show tried to give Geralt, a character known for being a man of few words who relies on action, a lot more dialogue. Adding humor also felt out of character and didn’t fit with what makes Geralt, Geralt.

Not only did viewership of The Witcher drop significantly, but the remaining audience wasn’t pleased with Season 4. It received the lowest ratings in the show’s history, averaging only a 3.9 out of 10 on IMDb per episode. This is especially notable considering the season reportedly cost around $221 million to produce, or $27 million per episode.

Viewers weren’t the only ones disappointed with the latest season of The Witcher. Season 4 received a significantly lower rating on Rotten Tomatoes (61%) compared to previous seasons: Season 1 (68%), Season 2 (95%), and Season 3 (79%). Unless Season 5 shows improvement, the fact that it’s coming out sooner won’t make much difference.

When and What Fans Can Expect From ‘The Witcher’ Season 5

Netflix

While there’s no official date yet, with filming for The Witcher Season 5 finishing in September 2025, the show is expected to return to Netflix in late 2026. Although post-production takes time, it’s unlikely fans will have to wait until 2027 to see how the story ends. However, a bigger question is whether the show can recapture the interest of viewers, especially those who stopped watching after Season 4.

So, I’m really excited for the final season of The Witcher! It’s going to cover the last two books, The Tower of the Swallow and The Lady of the Lake, which means we’re finally getting to some of the biggest storylines. From what I’ve heard, a huge part of it will focus on Ciri – Freya Allan – trying to reach the Tower of the Swallow, and Geralt will be pulling out all the stops, even teaming up with the Hansa forces, to save her. And get this – Yennefer, played by Anya Chalotra, is finally going to have her showdown with Vilgefortz, Mahesh Jadu, and it’s all going down in a massive battle on the Skellige Isles. It’s shaping up to be an epic conclusion!

The Ithlinne Prophecy foretells a devastating future, and Ciri is destined to play a key role in preventing it. The story culminates in a final, epic battle at The Tower of the Swallow, bringing together events from the last two novels. Fans of both the books and video games can expect a thrilling and unexpected conclusion.

As Hissrich notes about Seasons 4 and 5:

We created and filmed both seasons consecutively, but they’re being released as two distinct parts. However, they truly tell a single, continuous story. Usually, TV seasons one through three end with a positive resolution, like the family being back together.

At the end of Season Four, we intentionally left things on a bleak note, creating a situation where everything seemed hopeless. We felt this was the only way to naturally divide the story and allow Geralt to begin a fresh chapter in Season Five.

The last season of The Witcher is coming out sooner than expected, and it will be interesting to see how viewers react to it compared to Season 4. You can watch The Witcher on Netflix.
