As a longtime fan of the Witcher series, I can hardly contain my excitement for The Witcher 4! After the rollercoaster ride that was Cyberpunk 2077, it’s heartening to see CD Projekt Red learning from their past mistakes and setting themselves up for success. The new focus on structure, communication, and avoiding crunch time is music to my ears (and Geralt’s, I suppose).
At The Game Awards, CD Projekt Red unveiled the initial glimpse of The Witcher 4, the highly anticipated sequel to 2015’s The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Since then, it has been nearly a decade, during which their subsequent title, Cyberpunk 2077, launched with various bugs and problems that required several years of fixing. CD Projekt Red aims to avoid repeating such mistakes in the development of The Witcher 4.
In simpler terms, Sebastian Kalemba, director of The Witcher 4, shared with IGN that the challenges faced by their team during the development of Cyberpunk 2077 have influenced how they organize and manage the process for creating future games.
As a gamer, I’m excited to share that our production process has undergone a fantastic transformation! We’re meticulously mapping out each stage of development now, ensuring a strong foundation is laid. This careful planning is already making our creations more cohesive and streamlined. It gives us better control over this intricate gaming world, boosting everyone’s confidence when it comes to daily game development.
Kalemba along with executive producer Małgorzata Mitręga highlighted that the development team has significantly improved communication among its various sections, and CD Projekt Red is striving to establish a more conducive work environment in order to prevent the high-pressure situations, or ‘crunch time’, experienced during the making of both Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3.
For approximately two years, The Witcher 4 had been in an initial development phase. However, just recently, the team expanded to over 400 members and commenced full-scale production. In addition, the developer assured that AI would not replace human labor during this growth period. Moreover, they hinted that The Witcher 4 will surpass both Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3 in size and quality.
