‘The Wedding Banquet’ Remake, Starring Bowen Yang and Lily Gladstone, to Open BFI Flare: London LGBTQIA+ Film Festival

This year’s BFI Flare: London LGBTQIA+ Film Festival will debut Andrew Ahn’s remake of Ang Lee’s 1993 romantic comedy “The Wedding Banquet,” starring Bowen Yang and Lily Gladstone, titled “Andrew Ahn’s ‘The Wedding Banquet.’

The movie set to make its global premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on Monday evening, will instead make its international debut on March 19th at the BFI Southbank in London, and the star, Ahn, is expected to be present for the event.

Based on a recent announcement, “The Wedding Banquet” can be described as an amusing tale that revolves around a unique family dealing with the ups and downs of family pressures, exploring themes of queerness and cultural self-awareness.

Angela and her partner Lee have been struggling financially due to their unsuccessful IVF treatments. On the other hand, their friend Min, who is secretly a wealthy heir of a multinational corporation, has an expiring student visa. When his boyfriend refuses his marriage proposal, Min proposes a green card marriage to Angela in exchange for helping fund Lee’s IVF. However, their private wedding plans are disrupted when Min’s suspicious grandmother unexpectedly arrives from Korea, demanding a grand and extravagant wedding instead.

In addition to Yang and Gladstone, “The Wedding Banquet” features Kelly Marie Tran, Han Gi-Chan, Joan Chen, and Youn Yuh-Jung as its stars. This film was jointly written by Ahn and James Schamus, who were also the co-writers of the 1993 script’s original version.
