Sadly, “RuPaul’s Drag Race UK” champion, The Vivienne (whose real name is James Lee Williams), has passed away. She was only 32 years old.
It was confirmed through a statement shared on Instagram by Williams’ manager, Simon Jones, that Williams had unfortunately passed away during the weekend.
With profound sorrow, we announce the passing of our cherished James Lee Williams, affectionately known as The Vivienne, over the weekend. James was a deeply admired, kind-hearted, and extraordinary individual. His family is devastated by his untimely demise, mourning the loss of their son, brother, and uncle. They take immense pride in the remarkable accomplishments James achieved during his life and career. At this difficult time, we kindly request privacy for the family to cope with their grief.
A few days later, Jones penned a heartfelt message that read, “I never imagined I’d have to write these words. Viv was not just a friend, but also a client and someone I held dear. From the first encounter in 2019, I felt we could achieve something extraordinary together, and I had the privilege of managing them. Their talent was boundless, and the radiance they brought into every room was breathtaking. No one has ever made me laugh as much as Viv did. Their humor was unique, their wit sharp, and they were simply unparalleled.
In 2019, Williams became the inaugural champion of “RuPaul’s Drag Race UK” and later appeared in the seventh series of “RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars.
As a devoted fan and follower of “Drag Race,” I’ve found myself at a loss for words, much like Michelle Visage herself. In her recent post, she expressed her feelings as, “I just can’t find the right way to put it.” It seems that her heart is heavy with emotion, and I can only imagine the depth of her emotions behind those few simple words.
Visage expressed, “Looking back at when I first arrived in the UK, you were a constant presence – always cheerful, always generous, always sharp. Your laughter, your humor, your skill, your drag performances – I admired it all, but what I cherished most was our friendship. You were a guiding light for many. Witnessing your West End debut was awe-inspiring, as if I was watching my own dream come true through you. I feel fortunate to have known you and to have shared so many joyful moments with you.
1992 saw the birth of Williams, hailing from Colwyn Bay, Wales. Apart from being an actor on stage, they were also a talented musician. In 2022, they launched their first EP titled “Bitch,” and in 2023, they played the role of the Wicked Witch of the West in a London’s West End adaptation of “The Wizard of Oz” on stage.
