‘The Truth Is…’ Fire Country’s Showrunner Broke Down Why (Spoiler) Was Killed Off In Season 4’s Premiere

Be warned: this contains spoilers for the first episode of Fire Country Season 4! If you haven’t watched it yet, you can stream it now with a Paramount+ subscription.

Fans spent the summer wondering about the fate of characters on *Fire Country* after the Season 3 finale. It was confirmed at the beginning of Season 4 that Bode’s father, Vince, tragically died in the fire. This is a major loss for the CBS series and will undoubtedly affect the characters going forward. I recently spoke with the showrunner and asked her about the difficult decision to kill off Vince Leone.

Before *Fire Country* season four premiered in 2025, I interviewed showrunner Tia Napolitano for TopMob. Naturally, I began by asking about the biggest surprise of the premiere: the death of Billy Burke’s character, Vince. Napolitano explained that the decision reflected the inherent dangers of firefighting and the likelihood of tragic events occurring.

Firefighters inherently face life-threatening situations as part of their job, and we wanted to acknowledge that reality in the show. We’d always considered exploring this possibility, and with Season 4, it felt like the right time to introduce a new direction. This character’s storyline was crucial to the show and deeply affected many others, so his departure created a powerful opportunity to explore compelling and original stories.

She raises a valid point – firefighting is genuinely dangerous, and so far, no main characters on *Fire Country* had died. This death, along with Gabriela’s departure, represents the most significant shift the show has seen. It now gives the series a chance to explore completely new storylines and dramatically change things up.

Vince’s departure is a huge loss for the show. As we anticipated Season 4, I wondered how his absence would affect Bode and the rest of the team at Station 42.

Burke’s death creates a significant challenge for the station, raising questions about his replacement. On a more personal level, it deeply affects his son, Bode, and wife, Sharon. Beyond his family, Burke was a father figure, mentor, and friend to many, making his loss truly tragic.

Napolitano explained that this loss will deeply affect not only the characters but also the audience throughout Season 4.

The show began with a strong focus on Riley’s death, a loss we wanted the audience to experience with the characters in the present day. We felt Season 4 was the right time to explore this and introduce some significant changes.

Paramount+ offers plans starting at $7.99 per month or $59.99 per year. You can choose between the Essential plan at $7.99/month and the ad-free Premium plan for $12.99/month. Enjoy popular CBS shows like *Fire Country* and its new spin-off, *Sheriff Country*. See the deal here.

Early in the series, we find out Bode’s sister, Riley, has passed away. Her death and the resulting grief were central to the first seasons of *Fire Country*. Unlike Riley, though, we actually witnessed Vince’s death and had a connection with his character. That’s why his death had such a strong impact and was a deliberate choice to create drama and change the direction of the show.

You can continue to follow the story of how Vince’s death affects the show *Fire Country* with new episodes airing Fridays at 9 p.m. Eastern on CBS. Episodes are also available to stream on Paramount+ starting the day after they air.
