The Transformers Saga Is Leaving Netflix After Christmas

A large portion of a popular movie series will be removed from a major streaming platform after Christmas.

On December 25th, most of the original Transformers movies will no longer be available on Netflix. After Christmas, fans wanting to watch the 2007 film or its first three sequels – Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, and Transformers: Age of Extinction – will need to find another way to stream them.

In 2007, Michael Bay directed Transformers, offering a fresh look at the classic characters. The movie stars Shia LaBeouf as Sam Witwicky, a teenager who discovers he’s connected to an ancient mystery through his ancestor, a famous Arctic explorer, and soon finds himself in the middle of it all.

The main cast of Transformers included Megan Fox as Mikaela Banes, Josh Duhamel as Captain William Lennox, Rachel Taylor as Maggie Madsen, John Turturro as Agent Seymour Simmons, Anthony Anderson as Glen Whitmann, and Jon Voight as John Keller. Peter Cullen and Hugo Weaving voiced the iconic characters Optimus Prime and Megatron, respectively, leading a talented voice cast for the robot characters.

The first Transformers movie was a huge hit, earning over $709 million worldwide on a $200 million budget. Even though critics weren’t overly impressed, its success launched a franchise that has grown to include seven major films. Michael Bay directed the first five installments, then Travis Knight took over for 2018’s Bumblebee, and Steven Caple Jr. directed 2023’s Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.

I’ve been a fan of the Transformers movies for years, and it’s amazing to think the whole series has made over $5.29 billion in theaters! Considering they only spent about $1.42 billion making all the films, that’s a huge return. And honestly, there’s been so much other stuff too – toys, cartoons, comics… you name it. But even with all that, it feels like the franchise hasn’t been doing as well lately, which is a little disappointing.

What’s Next for the Transformers Franchise?

Fans of the Transformers movies are worried about the recent combination of Paramount Pictures and Skydance Entertainment, as it could create problems for several films and TV shows. However, it seems the Transformers franchise is still going strong at Paramount, even though the studio’s new owners might be taking it in a direction some fans aren’t thrilled about.

I was really excited to hear back in August that the team is focused on making Paramount the top choice for filmmakers and actors again. It’s clear they understand that amazing movies start with amazing creators. They also plan to be smart about how much content they add to their streaming service and what they produce in the studios – it’s about quality as much as quantity, which I think is fantastic.

This announcement came right before news surfaced that Paramount Pictures had been considering several different scripts, including one that would have reunited Michael Bay with the franchise. Although some of these scripts might still be developed, there’s been no indication of that happening since the merger between Paramount and Skydance was completed a few months ago.

You can watch all four Transformers movies—Transformers, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, and Transformers: Age of Extinction—on Netflix until December 25th.
