Savannah Guthrie described the frightening days following her mother Nancy’s disappearance in a recent interview with Hoda Kotb. She recounted learning about the abduction on February 1st, sharing a deeply emotional conversation with Kotb. Despite the difficult details, the interview highlighted how much remains unknown about what happened to Nancy and who might be involved. Guthrie appeared on television hoping to encourage anyone with information to come forward, stating, “Someone can do the right thing, and it is never too late.” The interview also revealed the strength and resilience of Guthrie’s family as they cope with this challenging time.
Guthrie learned about her mother’s disappearance from her sister
Savannah Guthrie recounted the weekend her mother went missing. She had just returned home with her children from a visit with Carson Daly’s family while her husband was on a tennis trip – a Christmas gift she’d given him. Shortly after arriving, her sister, Annie, called with devastating news: their mother was missing. Annie had already contacted 911, and police were already at their mother’s house. Annie and her husband, Tommaso, had also checked local hospitals, initially concerned that their mother might have had a medical emergency and wandered off or needed assistance. Guthrie says the situation was completely baffling.
Guthrie’s brother first identified it as a kidnapping
Nancy’s brother, Camron, was the first to suspect foul play in her disappearance. Guthrie notes that Camron’s background in military intelligence gave him a unique ability to quickly assess the situation. “He’s incredibly sharp,” Guthrie said, “and he understood right away what had happened, even just from our phone call.”
They believe only two of the ransom notes were legitimate
When Nancy first went missing, Guthrie and her siblings used Instagram to read messages hoping to reach the kidnappers and offering to negotiate. Several supposed ransom notes were sent to news outlets, but investigators only believed two of them were genuine. Guthrie reflects, “Someone who would send a fake ransom note really needs to think about their actions.”
Guthrie says the speculation around her brother-in-law caused “unbearable” pain
Early on, some people wondered if Nancy’s brother-in-law, Tommy, had something to do with her disappearance, but Guthrie insists that’s not true. She explains that her sister and brother-in-law were incredibly supportive of her mother, and her brother was always fiercely protective of her.
Guthrie fears her fame might be the cause of this
The most heartbreaking moment in Guthrie and Kotb’s conversation comes when Guthrie wonders if her public profile played a role in her mother’s disappearance. Shortly after Nancy went missing, Guthrie asked her brother if her fame might have made her mother a target, and he admitted it was possible. Guthrie says she already suspected as much, and both she and Kotb become emotional.
