‘The Toxic Avenger’ Reboot Coming to Theaters in 2025

As a die-hard film enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that I’ve got some exciting news! Ciniverse has officially confirmed that “The Toxic Avenger,” a hilariously grim remake of Troma Entertainment’s iconic 1984 cult classic with the same title, is set to hit the big screen in 2025. Can’t wait!

Under the direction of Macon Blair (“I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore”), the remake of “The Toxic Avenger” is set to debut as an unrated, nationwide screening sometime this year, featuring Peter Dinklage in a leading role.

Director Blair expressed heartfelt thanks to the team behind ‘The Toxic Avenger,’ who proved to be both supportive and skilled as we sought a suitable distributor for our film. In a statement, he noted how exciting it is that audiences will finally get to watch this movie in theaters, describing it as a lively, crowd-pleasing flick. Essentially, it’s about a mutant hero who uses a mop to defeat villains, making it enjoyable for all ages! Our main aim was to maintain the essence and soul of the original Toxie (which left a lasting impression on me from my early years) while also creating something new that would appeal to Troma fans. Working with Lloyd and Michael at Troma has been a pleasure, Legendary’s team is outstanding, and I can hardly wait to collaborate with Cinverse to share this rendition of Toxie with both old and new fans.

In the latest installment of Lloyd Kaufman and Troma Entertainment’s franchise, Peter Dinklage plays Winston Gooze, a janitor who is forced into a life-altering transformation following an unexpected incident, becoming the mutant avenger known as Toxie. Equipped with his iconic mop, this unconventional hero fights against misfits, criminals, and corrupt executives all while trying to salvage his relationship with his son. The narrative maintains the rebellious, offbeat spirit of the original ‘Toxic Avenger’ while infusing a modern, innovative spin on the tale.

Additionally starring in this movie are Kevin Bacon, Elijah Wood, Jacob Tremblay, Julia Davis, and Taylour Paige, along with Dinklage.

Michael Herz, along with myself, and Toxie, have wiped away our tears! Macon Blair’s new take on Toxie’s life is superior to the original by Troma! The fans of Troma are bound to be thrilled with this reboot!” Kaufman expressed his excitement upon learning about its upcoming release.

Chris McGurk, chairman and CEO of Cineverse, also noted that ‘The Toxic Avenger’ isn’t just an excellent movie; it’s a crucial one,” he said. “Peter Dinklage’s exceptional portrayal and Macon Blair’s courageous direction create a tale that mirrors the worries of our era through wild humor and unyielding ingenuity. Movies like this, which challenge conventions, are often avoided by big studios, but Cineverse thrives on promoting daring, unrestrained storytelling. We firmly believe that audiences are prepared – and excited – for films of this nature to lead the way.

Blair himself penned the screenplay for this movie, which is a remake of Kaufman’s 1984 work. The production of the film is handled by Mary Parent, Alex Garcia, Lloyd Kaufman, and Michael Herz. Andrew Pfeffer, Jay Ashenfelter, and Macon Blair serve as executive producers. Mark Bennett and Julie Harkin are responsible for the casting process.

Collaborating behind the scenes with Blair are cinematographer Dana Gonzalez, production designer Alexander Cameron, editors Brett W. Bachman and James Thomas, visual effects supervisor Chris Ritvo, costume designer Vanessa Porter, as well as composers Will Blair and Brooke Blair.

Through a deal with Legendary Entertainment, Cineverse secured the rights to screen films in U.S. and Canadian theaters, as well as for home entertainment and streaming, across their platforms. This arrangement was finalized by Gary Loffredo, the chief legal officer at Cineverse, along with Yolanda Macias, the chief content officer, and Brandon Hill, the executive director of acquisitions.
