As a devoted cinephile with over three decades of immersion in the silver screen, I must confess that my heart swells not only for the grandeur of Hollywood but also for the camaraderie and resilience displayed behind-the-scenes. The finale of “The Talk” is a poignant reminder of these very qualities, as it brings to a close 15 years of laughter, tears, and the occasional studio-audience-induced vomit (a story for another time).
As “The Talk” prepared to conclude its 15-year journey with its last live episode, the set was already filled with champagne toasts among the cast and crew, marking the end of this cherished show. The producers commemorated the occasion by bringing everyone together on stage for a heartfelt farewell toast.
The throng surged onto the stage to join Akbar Gbajabiamila, Amanda Kloots, Natalie Morales, Jerry O’Connell, and Sheryl Underwood in a grand send-off ceremony.
Morales expressed gratitude for everyone tuning in and sharing our moments of laughter, tears, and joy. We’re thankful for your presence with us, whether it’s our dedicated crew or our amazing viewers who have consistently filled these seats. A special shout-out to our executive producers, both past and present, as well as the fantastic team behind the scenes. In daytime television, we will miss each and every one of you dearly.
Added Underwood: “We thank God for 15 amazing seasons. We’re very grateful.”
To begin the climactic end of “The Talk,” the crowd in the studio erupted into a heartfelt and prolonged standing ovation for our hosts, leaving them visibly moved. In that moment, I found myself questioning, “I guess I’m just wondering what’s got everyone in such a warm and friendly mood today.
In his statement, O’Connell specifically recognized Underwood, the longest-serving host of “The Talk”, for making him feel welcome. He explained that he watched his initial episode and was astonished to find himself practically bouncing out of his seat. After the show, Sheryl, a fellow host, pulled him aside and encouraged him, saying, “hey, man, you’ve been here before. Just act like you’ve been here.” O’Connell expressed his gratitude towards Sheryl for her warm welcome.
Morales expressed: “To me, the enduring impact of our show lies in the happiness we spread. We provided a momentary escape for folks amidst their daily routines. Whether they were working or playing, they could pause and enjoy us, perhaps find a chuckle, and momentarily forget their troubles for an hour. I trust that, at home and in our studio, we managed to offer some relief from the world’s difficulties. Here, we have love for one another. I believe we conveyed this mutual respect and joy daily, and I hope it reached you as well.
For Kloots, “Living with a child means I visit here daily and enjoy discussing various topics, from the amusing to the significant. I’m incredibly thankful for this opportunity. We don’t argue, instead, we value each other’s viewpoints.” (This version attempts to maintain the original’s tone and meaning while using simpler language.)
GBajabiamila praised the “excellent work atmosphere,” stating that he enjoys coming to work each day and feeling content here. No matter where in the building I was, there was always a positive vibe and good company. When I embarked on this journey, the idea that resonated with me was it would be more about dialogue rather than dispute, particularly given the current climate.
In the last episode, there was a recap segment showcasing highlights from Underwood’s lengthy stint on the program, having joined during Season 2 back in 2011. Additionally, it included a collection of some of the most outrageous scenes throughout “The Talk’s” fifteen-year history.
Underwood shared the story of when she first auditioned to join “The Talk,” and first met original hosts Sarah Gilbert (who originated the series) and Julie Chen Moonves. “I said, the girl from ‘Big Brother’ and girl from ‘Roseanne’? Sure. I don’t think I have a job. I think I’m just going to meet them. So I meet them, and then I go to breakfast at the Polo Lounge with Sharon Osbourne. And she vomits on me at the Polo Lounge. This is a true story.”
Underwood revealed that she only shared the tale about Sharon Osbourne’s vomit incident after Osbourne herself disclosed it. As Underwood recounted, ‘She ended up telling the whole story and got sick in her car, vomiting everywhere.’ It turns out she had a stomach bug. I’m really grateful I didn’t offer to give her a ride home.
One notable guest at the final event was Howie Mandel, a frequent face on “The Talk.” He graced our screens once more, this time to honor the hosts with special awards titled “The Talkies,” as a tribute.
For many years, this program has felt like a second home to me,” Mandel expressed. “Today, I’m here to celebrate my friends in a unique way. Nikki Glaser is receiving the Golden Globes. As for me, I’ve got this.
The Talkie for “best competitor” went to Morales. Gbajabiamila was named “most likely to crash a cooking segment.” Kloots was given the award for “pillow prizefighter.” O’Connell was handed the Talkie for “best performance by a topless host.” Underwood was given the honor for “best 1-800 shout out.”
Underwood expressed gratitude to the director of the show, crediting him for potentially saving his life. He explained that when he first arrived, they had a conversation at a table, and Underwood thought they were only filming him from the waist up. However, he didn’t realize they could capture all the shots. The director then whispered in his ear, ‘close your legs.’ Underwood also extended an apology to camera five.
The series finale of ‘The Talk’ concluded gracefully, stretching out for an extended credit roll that showcased footage of everyone from the team who brought it to life.
