Among the seemingly few individuals, I was one who deeply disliked the horror film titled “The Substance.” However, there’s a solid justification as to why Demi Moore deserves to win awards this season.
On the rare occasions when I have to retract my professional judgment, I’m not doing so this awards season. However, it seems that several potential “villains” are more evidently nominated across various award shortlists this year (cough, Emilia Pérez), and unfortunately, The Substance isn’t typically among them.
In simpler terms, it’s unlikely that a horror movie directed by a woman, exploring ageism in Hollywood and reviving the career of a strong 62-year-old actress, would receive negative reviews. However, if someone were to read a one-star review, then perhaps it could get some bad press.
Prior to hitting the publish button on that review, I received criticism for my strongly opinionated perspective. Surprisingly, our entire TV & Movies team does not share my views (I’m sorry, colleagues), and following its release, I encountered numerous men who felt compelled to explain why my viewpoints were incorrect. Additionally, I was taken aback when it appeared on our list of the best movies of 2024.
Approximately three months have passed, and I still maintain the same sentiment. The movie appears to be exceptionally forward-thinking initially, but upon closer examination, it lacks any substantial depth (a play on words). In essence, Coralie Fargeat is providing a watered-down version of Feminism for beginners, drenched in blood and dismembered elements.
I yelp, but let me clarify – there’s only one instance where this yelp doesn’t apply: Demi Moore. Now, this might catch you off guard, but I firmly believe she should win the Best Actress award at the Oscars, hands down.
I let out a small yelp, except when it comes to Demi Moore – she’s the one exception. Believe it or not, I strongly feel that she deserves the Best Actress Oscar more than anyone else.
Demi Moore has to win Best Actress for the most obvious reason
Even though it seems like you might be chuckling or questioning my integrity via this virtual medium, let’s first ensure I’m consistent with my own beliefs and actions.
In October’s review, Jasmine singled out Moore for praise, stating, “There’s no question about it – she delivers an outstanding performance here. Her ability to tap into a deep, primal emotion and translate it convincingly on screen is remarkable, making her a strong contender for awards.
Instead of basking in self-satisfaction after her Golden Globe victory, I acknowledge that it’s all about her. It’s truly a significant achievement for a horror film to shine in the award circuit, but I firmly believe that The Substance’s Hollywood triumph is solely due to Moore herself.
She articulated it flawlessly during her acceptance speech, ultimately escaping the constraints of being typecast as a “screen siren.
1. This is where my thought process comes into play. Given their nominations as Best Actress contenders alongside Nicole Kidman and Cynthia Erivo, we would anticipate exceptional performances from them.
2. Let me explain my line of thinking here. Since both Nicole Kidman and Cynthia Erivo are up for the Best Actress award, we can expect that their performances will be at an award-winning level.
3. Here’s where I apply logic to the situation. Given that they’re nominated alongside Nicole Kidman and Cynthia Erivo in the Best Actress category, it is reasonable to assume that their performances will meet or exceed the standard of award-winning caliber.
4. My reasoning unfolds as follows: Both Nicole Kidman and Cynthia Erivo are up for the Best Actress award, so we can expect they’ll deliver award-worthy performances.
Mikey Madison, with no past experience, seems almost too good to be true. On the other hand, Moore, understanding that The Substance was her final opportunity, truly gave a career-defining performance.
In much the same vein, that’s the only comparison that truly fits – Pamela Anderson’s role in ‘The Last Showgirl’ is similar, yet distinct. Unlike her character, she didn’t suffer a public mental breakdown involving unsavory chicken wings or endure confinement within a hidden, windowless space as experienced by Margaret Qualley.
Watching an older, unconventional portrayal of Moore seek retribution, with her breasts swaying in the breeze, seems rather simplistic to me, but it certainly pushes Moore far beyond her usual comfort level.
If there were honors bestowed for groundbreaking performances that significantly reshape our understanding and offer something completely fresh, Moore would undoubtedly be the one deserving of an award.
After dedicating 45 years to my profession, being labeled as nothing more than a “cash cow” feels like an affront, an accomplishment that even The Substance herself couldn’t attain. I aspire for her to seize every accolade in the awarding circles they have to offer.
Option for streaming “The Substance” is on MUBI, while it can be purchased or rented through Amazon Prime Video. Additionally, don’t miss out on the most terrifying horror films of 2025 and the top neon-themed horror movies you shouldn’t skip.
