The Art Directors Guild (IATSE Local 800) has nominated “The Substance,” “Conclave,” and “Wicked” for its 28th annual awards honoring exceptional production design across film, TV, advertising, and music videos.
The Artistic Director’s Guild separates live-action movies into three genres: period pieces, fantasy films, and modern films. “A Complete Unknown,” “The Brutalist,” “Gladiator II,” “Nosferatu” and “Saturday Night” were nominated in the category of period pieces. In the fantasy film category, “Alien: Romulus,” “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” “Dune: Part Two,” “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” and “Wicked” all received recognition. “Civil War,” Conclave,” “Emilia Pérez” and “The Substance” and “Twisters” were nominated in the contemporary film category.
Although it’s tricky to predict that ADG winners will always align with the Academy Awards, it’s worth noting that last year’s ADG winner “Poor Things” (by Shona Heath and James Price) ended up claiming the Oscar. Similarly, this year’s ADG winners for “Dune” (Patrice Vermette and Zsuzsanna Sipos) have previously won an Oscar in the same category.

Predicting the Academy Awards based on ADG winners can be challenging, but it’s interesting to see that last year’s ADG winner “Poor Things” (by Shona Heath and James Price) and this year’s winner for “Dune” (Patrice Vermette and Zsuzsanna Sipos) both went on to win the Oscar in production design.
Notable misses of this year’s Excellence in Production Design Awards include “Blitz” and “Maria.”
On the TV side, “Shogun,” “Squid Game” and “Ripley” were among the nominated shows.
Jason Reitman, known for movies like “Juno,” “Up in the Air,” and “Saturday Night,” is set to receive the Cinematic Imagery Award.
This year’s nominees demonstrate the extraordinary creativity and foresight that characterize our profession. We are excited to unite the Guild in honoring the outstanding accomplishments of these exceptional Production Designers and their Art Departments, as stated by award show producers Michael Allen Glover, ADG, and Megan Elizabeth Bell, ADG.
Furthermore, the ADG plans to bestow Lifetime Achievement Awards on Lisa Frazza, Barbara Mesney, Dan Sweetman, and J. Dennis Washington. During this event, renowned production designer Carl Jules Weyl will be enshrined in the ADG Hall of Fame.
On February 15, 2025, the prestigious 28th Production Design Awards, led by renowned actress and humorist Rachael Harris, will occur at the InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown.
