The Strangers Chapter 3 Gets Exciting Release Update

A significant new development has been revealed for the latest installment in the continuing movie series. Fortunately, fans won’t have to wait much longer to see it.

According to The Direct, The Strangers trilogy director Renny Harlin gave fans an idea of when the next movie might come out. Harlin said, “It won’t be this year,” which is understandable considering Chapter 2 just hit theaters. But there was exciting news: “I would say that early next year is what it’s looking like,” meaning the wait between the first two films will be shorter than the gap between the others in the slasher trilogy.

Harlin then talked about what viewers can anticipate from The Strangers: Chapter 3 when it’s released, and emphasized how crucial the trilogy’s unusual filmmaking approach was to telling a full story. Harlin explained, “It delves into a really, really unsettling area,” when referring to The Strangers: Chapter 3.

It’s a real gift for a director to have the chance to tell a complete story like this. Typically, sequels are spaced out over several years, and they just revisit the same characters in a new setting. What’s special here is the ability to delve into our central character over four and a half hours, and witness her transformation. We see her begin as a fragile young woman, deeply traumatized by the home invasion in the first film, and then observe how she evolves by the end of the third movie.

The Strangers film series started with the 2008 movie of the same name, written and directed by Bryan Bertino. It was a big hit with audiences, earning over $82 million despite only costing $9 million to make. A follow-up film, The Strangers: Prey at Night, came out ten years later and, while not as popular, was still considered a success.

In 2024, the first installment of Harlin’s new trilogy, The Strangers: Chapter 1, was released in cinemas, much to the excitement of fans. The new trilogy continues the story from the original two films, following a young woman who is terrorized by three masked killers. All three films were filmed and created at the same time, ensuring the entire story would definitely reach theaters.

What Do Critics and Audiences Think of The Strangers: Chapter 2?

The Strangers: Chapter 2 premiered in cinemas on September 26th and received very mixed reactions from reviewers. Though the movie hasn’t yet earned back its $8.5 million production cost in its opening weekend, it’s heading in that direction, having brought in $7.7 million. However, The Strangers: Chapter 2 hasn’t impressed most critics. Currently, The Strangers: Chapter 2 has a very low 17% “rotten” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 59 reviews from verified critics, and a 57% audience score.

Shortly after the movie came out, Madeline Petsch addressed the online reactions, saying, “It’s hard to ignore them on social media. They’ll appear on my TikTok ‘For You’ page, or my producer will share them with me. It’s just how things are. Ultimately, I’m most focused on being happy with my own work – that’s the only thing I *can* influence.” Petsch continued, “I believe these movies spark a lot of different opinions, and that’s what’s great about film and art in general.”

The Strangers: Chapter 2 is in theaters now.
