Fans of Stranger Things have developed some fascinating and often unexpected theories about how the series will end. These range from ideas that are completely unbelievable to those that feel disturbingly possible. However, Stranger Things has a history of surprising its audience, so anything could happen.
As a huge Stranger Things fan, I was completely floored by the first four episodes of the latest season! I honestly didn’t think they could add much new to the mix, but they really did. Vecna managed to kidnap twelve kids to further his plans, Eleven reconnected with her sister Kali, and Will discovered he had powers he didn’t know about – and that’s just scratching the surface, especially with Dr. Kay’s mysterious motives still up in the air. With Vol. 2 and the extra-long finale coming up, everyone’s buzzing with theories, so I’ve rounded up the top five most mind-blowing ones fans have come up with.
Vecna Is Building a Wormhole to Travel Through Time
A popular theory online suggests that Season 5 will feature a time-traveling wormhole. This idea stems from a science lesson in Episode 3, “The Turnbow Trap,” where Mr. Clarke explains the Einstein-Rosen Bridge – a wormhole that can connect different points in time and space.
Fans theorize that Hawkins might be a wormhole itself, or connected to one, and that the twelve children Vecna kidnapped represent hours on a clock. This could lead to a situation similar to the movie Donnie Darko, where time is altered, or perhaps the kids will journey through time to prevent Henry Creel from becoming Vecna – a bit like the plot of Avengers: Endgame.
Vecna Is Being Controlled by the Mind Flayer
I’ve been seeing this interesting theory floating around that Vecna might not actually be the final villain! It makes sense because the Mind Flayer hasn’t really been a major threat since Season 3, but remember how terrifying it was in Season 2 when it used Will to spy on everyone? A lot of fans think the Mind Flayer could return and be the real big bad, throwing a huge curveball at the end of the series.
If the Mind Flayer was secretly controlling Vecna, it could open the door for Henry to turn things around and become a hero if he could break free. However, after two seasons of being a villain and harming children, a redemption story in just four episodes seems unlikely. We might have to admit that Vecna isn’t going to be the sympathetic character some fans are hoping for.
Will and Eleven Are Twins and Vecna Is the Father
Fans have come up with some truly wild theories about Vecna, and one of the most out-there suggests a family connection to some of the main characters. The idea is that Vecna is actually the biological father of Will and Eleven, meaning they’re twins. It’s a pretty crazy thought, but it’s gained some traction online.
Fans have theorized about how Eleven and her twin brother, Will, came to be. Some believe Dr. Brenner either used artificial insemination with Terry Ives (Eleven’s mother) or that Terry and Henry (Will’s father) had a brief relationship while working at the lab. Terry didn’t know she was carrying twins, and was heavily medicated during the C-section where she briefly saw Eleven. Dr. Brenner put Will up for adoption because he didn’t demonstrate any powers at first.
This theory has several flaws, such as the fact that Joyce never revealed she adopted Will throughout the show’s five seasons, or explained why she and Hopper kept Eleven a secret. But every fan community needs at least one theory that’s just meant to be fun.
Stranger Things Is Just a DnD Campaign
One of the longest-running and most popular fan theories about Stranger Things is that the whole show is actually a Dungeons & Dragons game being played by the boys in Will’s basement. This could explain why no major characters have died – the creators might be hesitant to ‘kill off’ characters the boys would lose in the game, given their strong connections to them.
I’ve come across a really interesting theory – what if the whole story is actually a book Mike Wheeler is writing as an adult, a way for him to process the trauma of losing Will? It makes a lot of sense, honestly. The thought of everything being revealed as not real at the end – like it was all just a dream – would be such a huge disappointment. It would fall into a really tired, overused trope, and after everything we’ve been through with these characters, that would just feel wrong.
Eleven Will Erase Everyone’s Memories of Her and the Events of Stranger Things
Perhaps the saddest possibility is also the most likely: Eleven might erase everyone’s memories of her and the events of Stranger Things. This would prevent anyone from accidentally opening another gateway to the Upside Down and would stop the government from pursuing people with powers like hers. Ultimately, she finds peace and happiness living in a secluded, beautiful place with waterfalls.
It’s a heartbreaking thought, but the evidence suggests Eleven may have made a huge sacrifice. For years, she’s built strong relationships with Hopper, Mike, and the people of Hawkins. Rumors circulated that Millie Bobby Brown was filming alone in Iceland – a country famous for its waterfalls – for the final episode. This implies Eleven took matters into her own hands, choosing to sacrifice herself rather than letting Hopper do it, and specifically sought out the waterfalls Mike referenced at the start of Season 5.
Stranger Things Vol. 2 premieres December 25 on Netflix. The series finale drops on December 31.
