The Stars Of Jungle Cruise Finally Share An Update On Whether Their Sequel Is Happening

Disney hasn’t had much success turning its theme park rides into good movies. While the recent Haunted Mansion film received slightly better reviews than the original, it still wasn’t a hit. Jungle Cruise showed some promise and even earned a sequel, but stars Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt have now confirmed that sequel is no longer in the works.

While speaking with Entertainment Weekly about their new film, The Smashing Machine, Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt were asked about the status of Jungle Cruise 2. Surprisingly, both actors gave the exact same response:…

I don’t think so.

While Jungle Cruise didn’t perform exceptionally well at the box office, its summer 2021 release occurred when many theaters were still operating with pandemic-related limitations. The film had already been delayed a year from its initial 2020 release because all U.S. theaters were closed at that time.

Jungle Cruise was available on Disney+ through Premier Access, meaning subscribers could watch it at home when it was still in theaters, but they had to pay extra. The fact that a sequel was announced suggests the movie performed well enough to justify making another one.

Dwayne Johnson believes the future of Jungle Cruise 2 was jeopardized by leadership changes at Disney. The sequel had been greenlit when Bob Chapek was CEO, but after Bob Iger returned to the position at the end of 2022, he reversed many of Chapek’s decisions, and it seems this film was caught in the shuffle. Johnson explained…

When Disney’s leadership changed, they seemed to move away from a previous project, likely influenced by the impact of COVID-19 on the business. They had already tried it once and weren’t confident about revisiting it, regardless of how well the team worked together.

When I spoke with Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt before the first Jungle Cruise came out, I asked if they’d be interested in making more films. Both seemed enthusiastic about the possibility, with Blunt specifically saying she’d enjoy continuing the series because she had a great time filming the first one, even though she wasn’t a fan of the cheesy jokes. But it appears that feeling has changed, as Blunt recently mentioned…

They did not want to set sail again, and that’s fine.

As someone who follows theme park adaptations for TopMob, I’m always excited when rides get turned into movies, even though those adaptations aren’t always successful. I liked the first Jungle Cruise movie and was hoping for a second one, so I was disappointed to learn it won’t be happening.

Just because Jungle Cruise 2 was cancelled doesn’t mean Disney won’t make more movies based on its theme park rides. Scarlett Johansson has said a Tower of Terror movie is still in the works, although it’s taking longer than expected. There were also previous ideas for films based on Space Mountain and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, but we haven’t heard much about those lately, so it’s possible they’ve been put on hold like Jungle Cruise 2.
