After a long wait, Star Wars received a manga adaptation in 1997, and it was beautifully done. Now, Dark Horse Books is releasing an art book collecting the original artwork by Hisao Tamaki, who masterfully translated Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope into manga form. Thanks to a successful Kickstarter, this hardcover collection of Tamaki’s original art boards will be available on June 16, 2026. Titled The Art of Star Wars: A New Hope – The Manga, it’s priced at $50 and is available for preorder on Amazon.
While The Art of Star Wars: A New Hope – The Manga, Vol. 1 only adapts the beginning of A New Hope, the official manga series continued with adaptations of The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, and The Phantom Menace, each illustrated by a different artist. The English translation of the final volume was released in 2015, and currently, there are no plans to adapt the remaining Star Wars films into manga. Despite this, the Star Wars manga offers a fresh way to enjoy parts of the iconic story. Although print copies are difficult to find, all 14 volumes are available as digital Kindle editions on Amazon.
While the main Star Wars movies have been adapted into manga, the Disney+ series The Mandalorian has also received a manga version. Created by artist Yusuke Osawa, this manga currently spans three volumes and faithfully retells the story of Din Djarin and Grogu.
As a huge Star Wars fan, I was so excited to see the anime-style stories in Star Wars: Visions on Disney+! And now, there’s even more coming! The third season is almost here, and to get ready, there are two awesome books. One, Star Wars: Visions – The Manga Anthology, takes some of the stories from the first season and reimagines them with incredible artwork from artists like Kamome Shirahama and Yusuke Osawa. The other, Star Wars: Visions – Treasury Edition, features completely new stories. It includes a continuation of the fantastic short ‘The Duel’ written by the legendary Takashi Okazaki, and another one by Peach Momoko that really explores the dark side and the Sith! I can’t wait to check them all out.
Beyond the adaptations of existing stories, several manga series explore original tales within the Star Wars universe. These include The Legends of Luke Skywalker, based on the novel by Ken Liu, and Star Wars: The Edge of Balance, a six-part series set hundreds of years before the prequel films during the High Republic period.
A new Star Wars adventure, Path of the Lightsaber, Vol. 1, begins this November! The story follows Nioka, a hopeful young woman who dreams of becoming a Jedi. When she unexpectedly discovers a lost lightsaber, she finds herself caught in the middle of the battle between the First Order and the Resistance. The first book comes out on November 11th and is available for pre-order on Amazon.
