The Shining’s New Numbered Limited Edition Is Up For Grabs At Amazon

Fans of Stanley Kubrick and Stephen King should definitely take a look at the newly available limited editions of The Shining before they sell out on Amazon. The retailer has just added The Film Vault’s Steelbook Special Edition and Solus Steelbook Editions of the 1980 horror classic to its 4K Blu-ray selection. The standard Steelbook Edition includes a clear plastic slipcover and is currently available for $48.86. The Steelbook Special Edition costs $87.07 and comes with some extra goodies: a themed cigar box, two posters, five character cards, and three behind-the-scenes cards. Each Special Edition features a numbered holographic sticker – only 6,000 were made – so it likely won’t stay in stock for very long.

The collectible editions of The Shining’s Film Vault were made in the UK and include 4K Blu-ray and 1080p Blu-ray discs that can be played on any region. Although you’re ordering through Amazon US, both versions are shipped directly from Amazon Global Store UK with complimentary shipping to the United States. Delivery is estimated to take around two weeks, but the free international shipping is a great perk.

Prior to appearing on Amazon, The Shining Film Vault editions were only available at Walmart in the US. While technically still true-Amazon US isn’t officially selling either version-prices were originally higher at Walmart: $65 for the standard Steelbook and $100 for the Steelbook Special Edition. Walmart sold out of both at those prices back in August. Then, in early September, they had to cancel many orders because they didn’t have enough copies. The Special Edition hasn’t been restocked, but Walmart did restock the regular Steelbook Edition last week-and it sold out again immediately (October 3). Important note: Due to resellers, prices at Walmart are now even higher.

The Shining is featured in The Film Vault Wave 3, alongside another early ’80s horror classic, Poltergeist. Both films were released in 1982. Like The Shining, Poltergeist was initially a Walmart exclusive in the US, but both versions are currently out of stock there. However, Amazon currently has the Poltergeist Special Edition Steelbook and Solus Steelbook available for $87.68 and $46.79, respectively. Both editions ship from Amazon UK and include both 4K Blu-ray and 1080p Blu-ray discs. Walmart previously sold the Special Edition for $100 and the Solus Steelbook for $65.

The limited editions of The Shining and Poltergeist Film Vault include 4K Blu-ray discs that can be played in any region, as well as 1080p Blu-ray discs. All four releases were a collaboration between Vice Press and Warner Bros. UK, with Vice Press handling the design.

The Film Vault Wave 3 at Amazon

  • The Shining Solus Steelbook (4K) — $48.86 ($65)
  • The Shining Special Edition Steelbook (4K) — $87.07 ($100)
  • Poltergeist Solus Steelbook (4K) — $46.79 ($65)
  • Poltergeist Special Edition Steelbook (4K) — $87.68 ($100)

If you haven’t heard of The Film Vault, it’s a collection of special editions of beloved movies from the libraries of Warner Bros. and Universal Pictures. The Film Vault began in 2022 and is the work of Vice Press, a UK-based company that focuses on officially licensed movie collectibles and artwork. While all 4K Blu-rays from The Film Vault are designed to play on any region player, because Vice Press is located in the UK, these limited releases of classic films aren’t often available in stores in the US.

The Shining & Doctor Sleep by Stephen King

Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining was based on Stephen King’s well-known 1977 horror novel. Interestingly, King himself isn’t a fan of Kubrick’s version. This dissatisfaction ultimately resulted in a new miniseries adaptation, which premiered on ABC in 1997. While the miniseries stays closer to the original book, it doesn’t receive the same level of praise. However, it’s still worth checking out. In 2024, Shout Factory released the The Shining miniseries on Blu-ray.

  • The Shining (1997 TV Series) — $20 ($35)
  • The Shining (1980) (4K Blu-ray) — $18.62 ($42)
  • Doctor Sleep: Director’s Cut (4K Blu-ray) — $14.69 ($25)

In 2013, Doctor Sleep was published by Scribner, continuing the story of The Shining with an adult Danny Torrance. The 2019 film version of Doctor Sleep was directed by Mike Flanagan. Both the book and the movie are excellent, but they don’t quite reach the level of the original works – which isn’t really surprising.

You can find both novels at affordable prices in hardcover and paperback on Amazon. The trade paperback of The Shining is currently $11.30, discounted from $20, and the vintage hardcover edition costs $19.80 (originally $45). Doctor Sleep is available for just $13.78 in hardcover and $10.49 in paperback.

  • Stephen King’s The Shining (Hardcover) — $19.80 ($45)
  • Stephen King’s The Shining (Paperback) — $7.50 ($20)
  • Doctor Sleep (Hardcover) — $13.78 ($30)
  • Doctor Sleep (Paperback) — $10.49 ($20)

As a Kubrick fan, I’m super excited to hear that Eyes Wide Shut is getting the 4K Blu-ray treatment! It’s awesome that Criterion Collection is releasing it on November 25th – it’s his last film, so it’s great to see it get this kind of attention. I can’t wait to add it to my collection!
