Good news for fans of Stanley Kubrick’s *The Shining*: you can now preorder a Limited Edition Steelbook version at Walmart. This might come as a surprise if you tried to preorder back in August or earlier this month, as Walmart previously canceled many orders for both the Steelbook and a more expensive Special Edition, citing low stock. However, it seems they’ve resolved the issue, so if your original order was canceled, you can try placing a new one now – hopefully, it will stay confirmed until the October 3rd release date.
The Shining is available in two limited editions. The Solus Steelbook Edition costs $65 and includes unique case artwork, a clear protective slipcover, and both 4K and 1080p Blu-ray discs. There’s also a $100 Special Edition which *includes* the steelbook, plus eight art cards and a double-sided poster, all packaged in a collectible cigar box. Unlike the Steelbook Edition, the Special Edition is currently sold out at Walmart and it’s unknown if they will offer it for pre-order again.
Both *The Shining* and *Poltergeist* are being re-released as part of Wave 3 of The Film Vault collection, featuring limited edition 4K Blu-ray and 1080p Blu-ray discs that can be played worldwide. You can still preorder special Steelbook editions of *Poltergeist* at Walmart. These releases were created by Vice Press in collaboration with Warner Bros. UK.

Just a heads-up: the two Film Vault editions available on Walmart’s website, and a few other versions exclusive to certain stores, have been out of stock in the UK and at specialized Blu-ray retailers for months.
The Solus Steelbook at Walmart will likely sell out very quickly. If you weren’t able to get the 2025 Walmart-exclusive edition of The Shining, this is another opportunity to own a special edition with a unique design. Here’s a preview of the $100 Special Edition, in case it becomes available again.
The Film Vault is a collection of special editions of beloved movies from Warner Bros. and Universal Pictures. Launched in 2022 by Vice Press, a UK-based company known for official movie collectibles, these releases feature 4K Blu-rays that can be played on any region’s player. Because Vice Press is based in the UK, finding these limited-edition films in US stores can be difficult. Currently, it looks like Walmart is the only US retailer carrying the special edition of *The Shining* from The Film Vault.
The Shining & Doctor Sleep by Stephen King
Stanley Kubrick’s film, *The Shining*, is based on Stephen King’s popular 1977 horror novel. Interestingly, King himself isn’t a fan of Kubrick’s take on the story, which led to a more accurate miniseries adaptation airing on ABC in 1997. While the miniseries isn’t as critically acclaimed as the film, it stays much closer to the original book and is still worth checking out. A Blu-ray version of the miniseries was released by Shout Factory in 2024.

Scribner released *Doctor Sleep* in 2013, continuing the story of Danny Torrance from *The Shining* as an adult. Mike Flanagan directed the 2019 film version. While both the book and movie are well-made, they don’t quite live up to the impact of the original *Shining* – which isn’t really a surprise.
You can find both books at affordable prices on Amazon in hardcover and paperback. The paperback edition of *The Shining* is currently $7.50, reduced from $20, and the hardcover is $19.80, down from $45. *Doctor Sleep* is available in hardcover for $13.78 and paperback for about $10.
