The Shield is a remarkably dark, realistic, and thought-provoking police drama that still doesn’t get the recognition it deserves, even almost twenty years after it aired. It’s as good as acclaimed crime series like The Wire and Breaking Bad, and should be mentioned alongside them, but often isn’t.
Following the success of The Sopranos, which ushered in a new era for television, many shows began featuring complex and flawed protagonists. While characters like Walter White, Omar Little, and Don Draper are now considered television icons, Vic Mackey from The Shield often gets overlooked despite being just as compelling.
What Is The Shield About?
The Shield resembles a standard police drama, featuring a team of detectives working in a small, rundown station. However, it’s considerably grimmer than most shows of its kind, like those from Dick Wolf. The series is set in Farmington – nicknamed ‘The Farm’ – a dangerous, made-up neighborhood in Los Angeles. The detectives work out of a former church called ‘The Barn’ and constantly battle high crime rates.
Michael Chiklis plays Mackey, a complex and often questionable leader of an elite police unit known as the Strike Team. Their mission is to reduce gang violence, and they’re willing to bend – and break – the rules to get it done. What really made The Shield different from other police dramas was the team’s widespread corruption.
How The Shield Was Different From Other Police Shows
What made The Shield stand out from other police shows was its unusually honest portrayal of corruption within the police force. Creator Shawn Ryan drew inspiration from the real-life Rampart scandal within the L.A.P.D. The show’s main team, led by Mackey, was loosely modeled after the Rampart Division, and the series was initially even considered being named Rampart.
Ryan realized that a typical police show about heroes and villains wouldn’t resonate with audiences after the scandals of the Rampart Division and the Rodney King case. His show, The Shield, avoids that trope – there are no ‘good guys.’ The police officers are just as flawed and willing to bend the rules – and even break the law – to get the job done.
The Shield Set The Stage For Breaking Bad
I truly believe The Shield was a game-changer, right up there with shows like The Sopranos and The Wire. It really helped set the stage for something like Breaking Bad to come along. It wasn’t your typical cop show – it felt much more real and showed a much grayer side of things, which was a huge shift for crime dramas at the time.
Although The Sopranos and The Wire are celebrated for shaping modern television, The Shield doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. It’s just as important and should be considered alongside those groundbreaking shows.
