Hello there! Feel free to step inside. By the way, I’m currently enjoying a rather large serving of humble pie, given my mistake from last week! You may recall that I stated Bella had more chemistry with Hailey. Well, wasn’t I proven wrong! We not only got a hint of queerness for Bela, but also a surprise kiss and an unexpected coming-out to a parent! This is quite the advanced coming out scenario, if you ask me. I must admit, I know all too well what a more typical coming out experience looks like. Let me finish my snack and we can discuss further.
Bela is handling her breakup with Arvind quite effectively. Her renewed passion for acting and humor has become beneficial, as she’s now finding herself involved with various campus issues. Unlike before, she’s not just focusing on Taylor’s complaints; instead, she’s showing interest in other students’ problems too. For instance, she recently intervened in a dispute between a student and his neighbor over loud music. Interestingly, this neighbor was engrossed in a VR game wearing only tight-fitting boxers, but Bela’s presence went unnoticed, even after causing a minor commotion.
Contrary to expectations, she wasn’t caught, which many might have predicted would lead to her first hookup of the season. However, Bela continues to surprise us! She shared this incident with Hailey at a fraternity party, where despite the lack of a Math department, these frats seem to have plenty of money. Though she intends to incorporate this experience into her show, Bela doesn’t foresee herself getting romantically involved with someone like him.
However, when it comes to finding someone and falling for their personality, both Bela and Hailey share the same sentiments. They seem drawn to each other, and their chemistry is evident. Bela leaves Hailey impressed but repels me by describing the frat’s odor as “socks, skunked beer, habañero buffalo sauce.” Hailey agrees, and they continue to exchange goofy grins until Bela leans in for a kiss! In essence, Bela is expressing her intention to get to know someone based on their personality, just like Hailey. Their developing bond is intriguing, to say the least.
Kimberly, Whitney, and Kacey are overjoyed, but not so much that they’d linger in the suite all morning, risking missing out on good eggs. Funny and relatable, Bela yearns for a bit more fanfare to celebrate her significant coming-out moment! She approaches Trish, who immediately makes it clear she’s not interested. Strike one! But Taylor, ever supportive, steps up to the plate. After moving to Taylor’s new place with Ash, Taylor confesses that she bought vodka but didn’t drink it. Thanks to Bela, she’s learned to express her feelings, and she did just that – talking to Ash and attending a meeting, all turning out fine. I wouldn’t say their relationship has reached this point yet, but I’d choose this nearly perfect resolution over them both returning to the starting line. Taylor is more thrilled than the roommates about Bela’s newfound queerness, but keeps it real by commenting, “You wear more neckties than Steve Harvey.” (We all have our tells!) Bela invites Taylor and Ash to the storytelling night at Sips. Bela’s return to comedy is serving as her coming-out moment, which will undoubtedly be more rewarding than lukewarm reactions from friends! However, in a last-minute twist, Bela’s mom shows up, grinning ear to ear. Uh-oh. Understandably nervous, Bela begins a less clear story about her talent for impersonating Siri. Embarrassing but also fair! Later, she shares with Ash and Taylor why she stumbled, and the Dickensian orphan, Taylor, encourages her to come out. She sees Bela’s mom loves her, and advises her to seize the opportunity to share things with her mother while it lasts. In my opinion, that’s sound advice!
While Bela is on this trip, it appears that the other girls have been organizing a protest or rally of sorts within the Athletics department. The main event unfolds when Whitney confronts the Athletic Board about her decision to leave the team, with the ultimate goal being her reinstatement since playoffs are approaching. Despite being challenged by her former teammates, Whitney remains resilient and vocal, expressing her dissatisfaction and stress caused by the team. Interestingly, it’s revealed that several sports teams on campus are facing similar issues, with one 23-year-old student struggling due to soccer. Led by Whitney and Willow, the girls bring their concerns to the Athletic Board, advocating for better facilities and resources. In a humorous touch, Willow demands separate body wash and shampoo in the showers, emphasizing the importance of small but significant changes.
While Bela exits and Whitney manages student athletes, Kimberly is educating herself about freedom of speech, college demonstrations, and standing up for one’s convictions. This is initiated by a conservative speaker visiting the campus, and it’s no surprise if you’ve ever read an article about campuses – students protest, administrators threaten them, and the students adapt their strategy. Kimberly must balance this political activism with a budding romance, Noel, who organizes the protests, and Eli, who reappears and apologizes for leaving her in a mess at a rave party. Oh, how I wish Kimberly could have a normal love life sometimes! When the administration demands the students disperse, they agree to regroup and devise a more strategic plan later. To be honest, most college students wouldn’t hack into the university’s main server as a means of protest. However, these students at Essex are remarkably persistent!
Now, there is a detail I might have overlooked – Kimberly used Bela’s ID to gain access to the server room, and it seems that this illegal action could come back to haunt her in the future.
To wrap things up: Kacey is the final mention. It’s true that she has lost her virginity to Cooper, and she’s as happy as can be. At the party, Canaan notices that Kacey might be moving too quickly for Cooper, and he’s correct when she invites him to lunch with her mom, rescheduling their squash court reservation so he could attend, and inviting him on their family cruise for New Year’s – even swapping Calvin’s ticket to Cooper’s name! It’s not hard to understand why Cooper suggests they take a break, is it? Similarly, it’s not surprising that Kacey can’t handle rehearsal with him for the musical BREAD: The Musical, as her performance lacks emotion. She claims she can pull it together for the show, but she just needs some time. Unfortunately, the show must go on, and she’s forced to appear on stage by her drama teacher, who then gives the part to Blair. It’s not surprising that we find Kacey crying on the floor of her room, ignoring her mom’s calls. This moment adds a touch of sweetness to the play as Kacey expresses her fear that she made a mistake with Cooper. The saddest part for me is when she admits that her mother is actually there to meet Cooper, and that she doesn’t really care about Kacey’s special night. Bela offers to slap Kacey’s mom or Cooper, or both! Her friends understand; after all, they’ve all had awkward or disappointing first times, but they’ve learned that it’s all part of the experience. It’s strange, messy, embarrassing, and you have to start somewhere! She tells them she loves them, they hug and cry, I can’t help but feel a little teary-eyed myself.
It’s great news that Kacey gets the self-assurance from her time with her friends to reclaim her spot from Blair, and Blair is delighted since she’s recently discovered she’s not so great at singing. However, I was hoping for an original love song, but instead, Kacey performs “Never Enough” from The Greatest Showman. As expected, her voice is more powerful this time around, though it leans towards pop rather than Broadway. Nevertheless, she’s got a fantastic voice. This song is known to tug at the heartstrings – it’s that emotional key change. And yes, I did shed a tear watching her performance. I can’t help it; I’m a musical enthusiast at heart.
So, that concludes our session today, I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did!
Office Hours
• Lila: “I’m pro slip out — it provides a natural intermission.”
Professor Tig: “By the way, I won’t be available during office hours today, not due to being occupied, but simply because I’m not feeling up to it.
I’m always keeping tabs on your Instagram, not just the regular square posts, but also the short videos that appear when I click the play button.”
This version maintains the original meaning while sounding more natural and easier to understand. It is also less informal than the original, which might be more suitable for a broader audience.
Bela: It seems like your reaction to Leighton coming out was more significant compared to my own journey as a queer person. Kimberly: That might be because Leighton experienced a lot more hardships. Kacey: I wish I could have supported Leighton during that time, she sounded incredibly courageous.
