As a seasoned observer of the vibrant lives of young adults navigating the complexities of college, I must say this latest episode was nothing short of captivating. The girls of Essex have proven themselves to be more than just sorority sisters; they are friends who lift each other up and challenge one another to be their best selves.
I’m thrilled to have the series back to its familiar form, but it’s a mix of feelings. It’s clear that this episode is stronger due to the return of the four characters, yet it also signifies the departure of Renee Rapp. We must learn to accept such paradoxes and enjoy the storylines and drama nonetheless! Let’s dive in!
It’s quite perplexing for me to find myself at a loss for words between two scenarios: seeing Kimberly and Whitney exchanging startled glances upon waking up with their feet together, or learning they had agreed to sleep that way. I must confess, I am still trying to wrap my head around this unusual sleeping arrangement. Could it be a common practice I’ve overlooked? It certainly left me puzzled for quite some time during the episode. On another note, it’s surprising how quickly Whitney managed to leave Kappa and that housing administration allowed four girls to share a triple room without enough beds. This is as astonishing to Kimberly and Whitney as the unconventional sleeping arrangement they have chosen. Leighton’s presence among the boxes in their common living room was just as surprising, especially since Bela overheard her conversation with Alicia. I am grateful, like Bela, that “bumper to bumper” does not refer to a sexual position.
Rest easy! It’s Kimberly who’s in charge here, as her past romantic entanglement with Canaan has landed them in their housing predicament. It seems she’s slow to pick up on the clues that the charming man at the housing office is offering about how to resolve their issue, causing me some concern that a blow from Whiney might have left her dazed yesterday. Nevertheless, it all works out, and the man at housing ends up finding Kimberly quite endearing and asking for her contact information. To be honest, I sensed something unusual about him, and I was delighted to confirm my suspicions during Lila’s fashion show when Bela spotted him kissing another man across the room. I initially thought he might be bisexual, but Kimberly brushes it off, understanding that this won’t be the last time she encounters a man who isn’t interested in her romantically.
Bela is being constantly irritated by Taylor, who has until the end of this episode to stop annoying me. Dramatically, it seems that Bela is stuck with someone who, quite honestly, can be just as aggravating as she is. However, so far, Taylor comes across as a Gen-Z character written by a Gen-Xer, and I find her boring! Bela writes up a fair report on Taylor for leaving a burning candle unattended and using her roommate’s space for extended periods. Taylor then retaliates by filing a complaint against Bela for trying to control her personal life and disregarding her religious practices and the need to burn a candle. Remarkably, the administration supports Taylor, which I find hard to believe! I exclaim, “Time’s up, Taylor!
After leaving her Kappa status behind and reuniting with her friends, Whitney makes it clear she won’t be preoccupied with boys for the upcoming year. Instead, she’s honing in on soccer, having received guidance from a teammate on improving her stutter kicks. Her studies, particularly African American Studies, are another focus. Despite the likelihood of romantic entanglements, boyfriends are strictly off-limits. A striking individual named Isaiah, who happens to be in her African American Studies class, is quite appealing—even with a shirt on this time! However, his wealth makes him unattractive to Whitney; she’s adamant about avoiding rich suitors after her boarding school years. Upon learning he’s the son of a billionaire, her interest wanes even further. She expresses her disinterest plainly when they cross paths on the basketball court. He responds with a lecture about Black Capitalism, claiming his father built his fortune from nothing. Interestingly, he clarified that his shirt was Balenciaga, not Versace. Their exchange leaves Whitney feeling embarrassed, as she doesn’t openly criticize his wealth. Despite my dislike for him, I can acknowledge the chemistry between Whitney and this man. I will maintain a cautious optimism about their potential relationship.
Leighton’s surprise doubles when she learns that MIT is located in Cambridge, and her acceptance is no exception. I too am taken aback by the notion that gaining admission to MIT could be this straightforward, but I try not to dwell on it! Indeed, despite her professor confirming that she had exceptional grades and scores, Leighton remains uncertain about leaving Essex and her friends. A visit from her father eventually persuades her. Though Rob Huebel’s character has always struck me as peculiar—why is he constantly at Essex?—the strong bond between him and Leighton as a father and daughter makes it hard to resent his presence. He cares for her and trusts she’ll make the best decision, even if it means leaving Essex and his beloved tree. They hum the Essex fight song tenderly beneath the mentioned tree, creating a touching moment. What a heartwarming scene!
It’s important to understand that saying goodbye privately isn’t exactly the same as telling your closest friends you’re leaving. Leighton, like many in her situation, tries to keep her departure a secret, but it slips out when she’s selling her textbooks, overheard by Jocelyn, and then spreads among their circle of friends. This revelation sparks a tense confrontation filled with emotional turmoil and apprehension about the impending change. All credit to these actresses for delivering powerful performances. Leighton is petrified at the thought of leaving but knows this move is crucial for her, and she relies on her friends’ support to take this step. As she puts it, “I came to Essex thinking I would date men and join Kappa — and I would have been miserable. And then I met you three, and you gave me the courage to be myself.” Frankly, who wouldn’t get emotional in such a situation? Fortunately, Bela, Whitney, and Kimberly aren’t made of stone either, and the quartet shares a heartfelt moment before promising one last night of fun and freedom.
In simpler terms,
Office Hours
Lila’s fashion show is impeccable in every aspect, from her unique focus on creating men’s underwear tailored for the gay community on Instagram, to her warm introductions: “Before we commence, I have a few thoughts to express. The event you are about to witness tonight could not have been realized by an individual alone, yet it was — and that individual is none other than myself!
When Leighton attempts to share with her friends that she’s transferring schools, she unexpectedly loses courage and changes the subject, asking them if they’d be interested in discussing the wind instead. This conversation then leads Kimberly to say something quite intriguing: ” frankly, I’m curious. What do you all think about the distinction between wind and a breeze? And what factors cause a gust?
• “FLEECE?! Fix her!”
Oh, how I wish Leighton were here. She wouldn’t have been interested in the boys, the physical attributes, or the undergarments, but she would have enjoyed seeing Trish stumble.
Shouldn’t we watch out for the person Bela conversed with while waiting for Taylor? Their interaction seemed quite romantic!
