The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives Recap: Having It All

MomTok has had a huge year, and Whitney Leavitt has been especially busy! Even before her Broadway debut, she’s been constantly on the go. While the other moms have been focused on things like Mayci’s book launch and keeping Taylor and Dakota apart, Whitney has been increasingly distant – both physically and emotionally – from her life in Utah. In previous seasons, Whitney was at the center of all the drama, but this season she’s only shown up occasionally, juggling dance rehearsals and work with various brands. Maybe it was always clear she was meant for something bigger than Salt Lake City, considering she’s always seemed reluctant to fully embrace the Utah lifestyle.

Episode six focuses heavily on Whitney, and we see her mostly alone, either excited about a new job or overwhelmed with everything she’s trying to manage. There’s a lighthearted moment where she’s practicing a samba in the kitchen, seemingly carefree, before getting fantastic news: she landed the lead role in a Hallmark Christmas movie – and she’ll also be an executive producer! Her agent playfully points out how well Los Angeles suits her. Whitney frames this as another dream come true, and it’s easy to imagine her announcing even bigger achievements soon. While she credits MomTok for opening doors, it raises the question of how she’ll balance these new opportunities with her commitments to her online community.

Whitney is really working hard to support Mikayla, who is going through a tough time with her health and marriage. It’s heartbreaking to hear about everything Mikayla is dealing with, especially since she and her husband, Jace, are still struggling to connect intimately, largely due to her health issues and the strain it’s putting on their relationship. It’s difficult to be around Jace right now, so Mikayla asked Whitney to be there for her during a specialized stem cell treatment, even holding her hand for support. I admire Whitney for stepping up, especially considering all the travel and coordination it involved. Mikayla just needs someone to comfort her during this process – someone to be there and offer a little care, and right now, that person is Whitney.

It’s really unfortunate that Whitney is risking her standing within the MomTok community by potentially skipping another event – this time, Mayci’s book launch. This issue stems from her feeling overwhelmed and disconnected as a mom, a feeling that surfaced at a pumpkin patch when she realized she hasn’t been as present for her kids as she’d like. While her husband, Conner, is supportive and assures her that he’s handling things, Whitney still seems to want it all – to be a perfect mom and maintain her public image. The problem is, she’s already facing backlash for missing a previous event of Mayci’s, and she was quick to criticize another mom, Jessi, for trying to get out of this very book launch. It’s baffling to see her potentially ruin the good relationships she’s built, especially considering how much she stands to lose – including votes on Dancing with the Stars to her competitor, Jen.

While Whitney sorts through her problems in California, back in Salt Lake City, Taylor is facing drama with her mother, Liann. Taylor is hesitant to tell Liann about sleeping with Dakota in Los Angeles, knowing her mother’s judgmental nature. As Taylor predicted, Liann reacts with anger and hurtful comments, even calling Taylor names and questioning her character. Liann believes she has the right to criticize Taylor, claiming a mother’s role isn’t to honor children, but to be honored by them. It’s a difficult situation, and Taylor wants to address it directly. She hopes a family therapist can help them improve their relationship. The therapy session starts off rocky, with Liann asking how to deal with a daughter who keeps making bad choices and playing the victim. However, by the end, Liann admits she struggles to show empathy but loves her children deeply, which Taylor sees as a positive step. Taylor is also grappling with issues surrounding her estranged biological father, who has passed away. She hires a genealogist and discovers she has two half-siblings still living.

It’s the day of Mayci’s book launch, and most of the MomTok group are meeting for brunch beforehand. Jen couldn’t make it because she’s sick – they even video called her to check – but everyone’s wondering where Whitney is. Taylor is upset about her absence, and Mikayla looks just as hurt as Mayci. Miranda points out the double standard, recalling how she was accused of only returning to MomTok for attention, when really it was about earning money. Jessi is especially critical, suggesting Whitney has lost interest in everything, including their friendship. It seems any positive feelings between them have disappeared.
