It was a bold move for the revived series to cast Rife as a guest star, especially considering how early in the revival they are. While he performed well in the role, Rife faced controversy in 2023 due to some problematic comments he made.
Variety is continuing to cover the controversy surrounding Matt’s recent joke. He issued an apology that included a link to helmets for people with special needs, which only added to the backlash. Variety reports that Matt defends his use of dark humor, believing every joke has its appropriate context. While he’s free to include any material in his comedy sets, certain topics – as seen with his Netflix special, Natural Selection – are likely to draw more criticism than others.
Matt Rife gained attention online after an initial incident, but subsequent discussions didn’t receive the same level of visibility, leaving him still viewed as a controversial figure. The show he’s appearing on is usually known for being positive and funny, so casting someone known for offensive jokes is a gamble, particularly at this stage.
