Since Zach Braff was initially confirmed for the ABC Scrubs reboot back in June, we’ve been hearing about new cast members regularly. Today brings the biggest news yet – a total of nine actors are joining this revival of a truly beloved sitcom. Seven of these actors are new to the show, and two are returning from the original Scrubs cast. While this new casting is exciting, I’m even more thrilled about the updates we’ve received regarding Donald Faison’s character, Turk, and Judy Reyes’ Carla.
The Newest Actors To Join The Scrubs Reboot
First, let’s look at the newest casting announcements. According to Variety, five actors have been chosen to play interns in Scrubs 2.0 (which isn’t the official name) and will be regular cast members alongside Braff, Faison, and Sarah Chalke. These actors are A Man on the Inside’s Ava Bunn as Serena, The Choral’s Jacob Dudman as Asher, The Rookie’s David Gridley as Blake, Lioness’ Layla Mohammadi as Amara, and Mirrorland’s Amanda Morrow as Dashan.
I’m so excited to hear that Saturday Night Live‘s Vanessa Bayer and Loot’s Joel Kim Booster are joining the new Scrubs! They won’t be main cast members, though – they’ll be showing up as recurring guest stars, just like Judy Reyes. And get this – John C. McGinley is coming back as Dr. Perry Cox! Vanessa will play Sibby, who apparently runs a wellness program for everyone at Sacred Heart Hospital. Joel will be Dr. Eric Park, an attending physician at the hospital. It’s going to be great to see them all! Can’t wait!
We’re also bringing back Robert Maschio and Phill Lewis, who will once again play Todd and Hooch as guest stars appearing in multiple episodes. Todd was a very memorable recurring character on Scrubs, with Maschio appearing in 127 episodes. Hopefully, the character has evolved and moved past the inappropriate jokes and behavior… but the high fives can stay! Lewis played Hooch in five episodes, and those episodes originally aired around the time he began getting noticed for his role as Mr. Moseby on The Suite Life of Zack and Cody. The big question now is, is Hooch still as wild as before? Most likely, yes.
What Judy Reyes Said About Turk And Carla In The Scrubs Reboot
Here are some new updates on where we’ll find Turk and Carla when the Scrubs reboot starts. Before the cast was announced, Judy Reyes discussed with TVLine her potential return to the iconic role. She shared that the recent table read was “really special” and confirmed that Carla is still a nurse at Sacred Heart. Furthermore, she and Turk are now parents to four teenage children, including their eldest, Izzy, who was introduced in season six of the original series. Reyes also stated:
I was really touched by the incredibly positive response when people found out I was returning to the show. I’ve only read the script for the first episode, and it’s amazing, so I’m eager to see how the rest of the series unfolds. I can’t wait!
It’s great to learn that Turk and Carla have such a large family, but I’m even more excited to see Carla working at Sacred Heart with her husband, JD, Elliot, and Dr. Cox. Currently, Judy Reyes is starring as Selena Soto in another ABC show, High Potential, which means she’ll only be in four episodes of the new Scrubs season. She’s “very thankful” that the network allowed her to film both shows, and it’s definitely better than her not being involved at all during Scrubs’ last season.
Scrubs 2.0 is scheduled to premiere on ABC around 2026. Until then, you can rewatch all nine seasons of the original with your Hulu subscription.
