Scientists have determined the scariest movie of 2025, and we completely agree with their chilling pick.
Horror films have been incredibly successful in 2025, with movies such as Sinners, Weapons, and The Conjuring: Last Rites earning significant revenue worldwide.
We’ve chosen our top horror films of the year, including titles like 28 Years Later, The Monkey, Dangerous Animals, and The Long Walk. We also loved Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, which is now in theaters and will soon be available on Netflix.
Here are some of the best horror movies released in 2025 so far. But the film officially named the scariest is listed below…
It’s official: Bring Her Back is the scariest movie of 2025
A recent survey called ‘Science of Scare’ has named ‘Bring Her Back’ the scariest movie released in 2025.
For the past five years, researchers have been studying 250 participants using monitors that track their heart rates and heart rate variability. Heart rate can show feelings like excitement or fear, while heart rate variability can indicate longer-lasting feelings of dread.
We combined the changes in average heart rate and HRV to create a ‘Science of Scare’ score, ranging from 0 to 100.
The movie Bring Her Back received a score of 68/100, landing it at number 24 on Science of Scare’s list of all-time scariest films. It was also the highest-ranking new movie from 2025 to make the list. Two other recent films, Weapons and The Conjuring: Last Rites, both scored 51/100.
Despite being released in 2012, Sinister is still the scariest movie, earning a Scare Score of 96 out of 100 according to Scott Derrickson’s supernatural thriller.
Why is Bring Her Back so scary?

The movie Bring Her Back was released in May and quickly resonated with both film critics and viewers.
The new film is from Danny and Michael Philippou, the directors of the scary movie Talk to Me. It stars Sally Hawkins as a quirky foster mom who welcomes two step-siblings into her home. However, as her actions become increasingly odd and frightening, it’s revealed she has a disturbing secret plan.
The movie deals with scary supernatural events, but it’s also deeply unsettling because of its realistic portrayal of domestic abuse. Our review highlighted that the film’s most impactful – and difficult – moments center around this theme, specifically showing instances of violence against children of all ages. While these scenes are tough to watch and sometimes feel overwhelming, it’s through the characters’ struggle to heal from this trauma that the film truly connects with the audience.
Honestly, Hawkins is super creepy in this movie, but it’s really well done. The filmmakers, and Hawkins herself, manage to make you feel some sympathy for her, even as everything falls apart at the end. It’s a really heartbreaking finish, and you’ll understand why she did what she did, even if you don’t agree with it.
