As a supporter, I’m excited to share that Matty Brown’s allegorical drama “The Sand Castle” is set for global release on January 24, exclusively on Netflix. In this film, we will once again see Nadine Labaki joining forces with talented Syrian refugee actors Zain and Reman Al Rafeea, who previously captivated us in “Capernaum.” This powerful production arrives at a crucial moment in the Middle East’s history.
Discussions for a truce between Israel and Hamas are ongoing, while the future remains uncertain for Syrian refugees following Bashar al-Assad’s departure from power. A movie, with a unique children’s perspective, bears striking similarities to current events not just in Syria but also in Palestine. This observation is made by Mandy Ward, a producer based in New York, who is part of the “Sand Castle” production team along with Front Row Filmed Entertainment in Dubai led by Gianluca Chakra and Empire Entertainment spearheaded by Mario Jr. Haddad.
Ward explains that he believes this movie originated from a perspective of individuals who felt out of place, and it follows their journey to find belonging. Notably, the storyline of an Arab family stranded on a seemingly perfect island, where they gradually reveal hidden horrors, symbolizes ‘the experiences of these refugee children and the turmoil in places like Syria.’
“Everybody is just looking for home, and this film really embodies the forgotten,” Ward explains.
It’s clear that “The Sand Castle” and “Capernaum” share a significant link, with the latter being directed by Labaki and winning the 2018 Cannes Jury Prize. Intriguingly, Labaki chose Zain Al Rafeea, a 12-year-old boy living in the slums of Beirut, who had fled from Daraa in southwestern Syria with his family, to play the main character in her film. This young actor was suing his parents for neglect and poverty. Afterward, Labaki assisted him and his family in relocating to Norway.
Initially, Nadine joined the project primarily for creative input, as Ward explains. Upon reading the script, she connected first-time director Brown with Zain and his family. Later, when Zain’s sister Reman was cast in “Sand Castle”, Labaki too became involved, taking on the role of the mother.
“So it was like the reuniting of family in so many ways,” Ward points out.
