It’s been a great year for Stephen King fans! The author is incredibly productive, and Hollywood consistently turns his stories into movies and shows. 2025 brought a wave of new adaptations and remakes, including…
Glen Powell solidifies his status as a major action star in this remake of the 1987 film The Running Man, which originally starred Arnold Schwarzenegger, who has publicly supported the new version. Despite the hype, the sci-fi film launched with a disappointing 71% score from critics, making it one of the lowest-rated movies of the year so far. It premiered on November 14th.
In 2025, there were four movie adaptations and two original films released. The year started strong in February with a darkly comedic film that critics generally liked, giving it a ‘Certified Fresh’ rating of 77% based on nearly 300 reviews. However, audiences weren’t as enthusiastic, giving it a score of only 55%.
The latest film, directed by Mike Flanagan—a frequent collaborator with Stephen King—received excellent reviews after its debut at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival. It was released in theaters this June and currently boasts an 80% ‘Certified Fresh’ rating from critics and an 88% audience score.
Stephen King’s The Institute was recently adapted for television, premiering on MGM+ in July. While critics gave the first season a lukewarm reception (64% approval), audiences enjoyed it more (71%). Despite the mixed reviews, the show proved very popular on the streaming platform, leading MGM+ to quickly move forward with plans for more.
The movie’s next release was The Long Walk. It took years to develop, but Francis Lawrence and JT Mollner eventually made it happen. The Long Walk was a hit with both critics and audiences, earning an 88% approval rating from critics (and a “Certified Fresh” badge) and an 85% rating from viewers.
The 2025 series It: Welcome to Derry was the next-to-last adaptation of the story. Directed by Andy Muschetti and produced by Barbara Muschetti, the show expands on the world of It. It premiered on October 26th and has received positive reviews, with a 78% rating from critics and an 80% audience score.
What Are Critics Saying About The Running Man?
Owen Gleiberman of Variety praised the new adaptation, pointing out how it differs from the original 1982 novel and the 1987 film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. He described the original as slow-paced, but suggested the new version, directed by Edgar Wright, feels more like a solid Bruce Willis movie.
Some critics felt the film started strong with realistic emotion and intensity, but ultimately lost momentum. Allison Rose of FlickDirect said it “delivers grit and heart, but loses its pace,” and Nikki Baughan of Screen International agreed, noting it had the potential to be a relevant and impactful story but didn’t quite stick the landing. Currently, the film has a 71% rating based on 42 reviews, but this is expected to change after its theatrical release, as more reviews become available. An audience score is not yet available since the film hasn’t premiered in theaters.
Ben Morganti from our team recently gave a positive review of The Running Man, highlighting its blend of exciting action and thought-provoking themes. He noted the film doesn’t try to be overly complex, making it an enjoyable moviegoing experience and prompting viewers to consider its connections to current society. The review also praised Glen Powell’s performance, recognizing him as a rising star.
The Running Man premieres in theaters on Nov. 14.
