Everyone was excited about Stephen King’s movie that was supposed to come out in 2025, but it didn’t do as well as another film, Now You See Me: Now You Don’t.
Streaming services are now surpassing traditional movie theaters in popularity. FlixPatrol data shows a shift in where people are watching content.
The movie The Running Man opened in theaters on November 14th, competing with Now You See Me: Now You Don’t, the latest film in the popular heist series. Despite having all the elements for success – a large budget, a remake of a well-known 1987 film, and a cast of famous actors – it still struggled.
The sequel to the heist film earned $208.4 million globally, with a production cost of $90 million. While most films need to earn about 2.5 times their budget to be considered successful, this movie significantly exceeded expectations.
Despite costing $110 million to make, the film The Running Man was a major disappointment, earning only $68.6 million worldwide and failing to recoup its expenses, according to The Numbers. However, it’s now finally performing better globally than Now You See Me: Now You Don’t.
Also released today, The Running Man is currently the top-performing title on the Apple TV Store in the U.S.
Both movies are still performing well internationally. The Running Man is currently the top film in Australia, while Now You See Me: Now You Don’t is leading in Canada and New Zealand.
What Is The Running Man About?
In the not-too-distant future, the most popular TV show is a dangerous game called The Running Man, where contestants fight for their lives.
This reality show pits contestants, called Runners, against professional hunters in a 30-day survival challenge. Everything they do is broadcast for viewers to watch, and the longer they survive, the more money they can win.
The show centers on Ben Richards, a man driven to help his ailing daughter. Facing limited options, he’s persuaded by the slick and determined producer, Dan Killian, to compete in a game. Surprisingly, Ben discovers a hidden talent and quickly becomes a popular contestant.
Despite generally positive reviews and strong audience interest, RoboCop, starring Peter Weller in the 1987 film, hasn’t resonated with modern critics. The sci-fi classic currently holds a 63% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes – the lowest score among all adaptations released up to 2025 – while audiences give it a more favorable 78% rating.
