The latest episode of Season 8, “Grand Theft Aircraft,” continues a storyline that started a few episodes ago. Officer John Nolan will be working with FBI Agent Matthew Garza, who leads a special task force at the Mid-Wilshire police station. Meanwhile, Monica Stevens, a recurring villain, has made a deal with federal authorities after a year as a fugitive. Garza and Lieutenant Wade Grey are now focused on arresting Monica’s criminal connections. Viewers first met Monica in Season 5 as a tricky lawyer and Wesley Evers’s ex-partner, and she provided a lively challenge for the main characters.
Changing the character from a lawyer who defends criminals to one who is a criminal was a risky move, but Season 8 quickly corrected course, putting her back in a more fitting role. She’s a dangerous character – unreliable, without morals, and always manages to stay one step ahead of the law. Although not an official member, Nolan has been crucial to the task force in two operations so far. However, his recent mission with Agent Garza might be a separate storyline, especially now that his wife Bailey has a new job. They could just be traveling to D.C. when things go wrong. Meanwhile, the relationship between Lucy Chen and Tim Bradford, now living together, continues to develop in Episode 7.
The Rookie Season 8, Episode 8, ‘Grand Theft Aircraft’ Keeps ‘The Rookie: Feds’ Alive
You can catch “Grand Theft Aircraft” at 10 PM, a new time slot this year. As usual, the episode will be available to stream on Hulu starting at 5 AM the next day. The show will now air after American Idol, which is expected to finish around the same time as the current season. Last year, The Rookie moved to the 9 PM slot after High Potential finished its run, but it will likely remain at 10 PM until the season finale.
ABC has revealed what will happen in Episode 8: Nolan and Garza will be involved in a dangerous operation that doesn’t go as planned. Lucy and Tim will have to deal with some relationship challenges when a surprise guest arrives. At the same time, the team will search the entire city for a suspect. Fans will also see more of Felix Solis as FBI Agent Matthew Garza, who has become a frequent guest on the show.
Aaron Thorsen rejoined the team working with Garza, but his job focused on using his experience as a former celebrity and convict. Nolan also joined the mission. The way the story is described suggests Thorsen and Nolan are actively collaborating with the task force, not just passengers on the plane. While viewers expect to see Nolan as a hero, this time they might get a glimpse of a different side of Garza.
What to Expect from ‘Grand Theft Aircraft’ and the Rest of The Rookie Season 8
The episode appears to follow the usual The Rookie format, featuring several storylines happening concurrently. While Nolan and Garza focus on their main case, the other officers at Mid-Wilshire will be dealing with various situations around the city. As they pursue the suspect, they’ll probably encounter other compelling problems. The Rookie stands out from other police shows because it focuses on the everyday experiences of officers on the beat, giving it a distinctive way of telling stories.
The rekindled relationship between Chenford marks a change in how The Rookie tells its stories. The show is moving away from the typical “will they/won’t they” dynamic. Now that they’re living together, their problems are more lighthearted and sweet. That’s why the arrival of an unexpected visitor feels significant – it introduces new tension. This visitor could be something simple, like one of their parents needing a place to stay and disrupting their plans or Tim’s personal space. Or, it could be Lucy’s friend Rachel, who has a history with substance abuse and also previously dated Tim.
There’s a chance Tim’s ex-wife, Isabel, could return, though her story felt complete. More intriguing, however, would be the reappearance of James Remar’s character. In Season 4, Tim reconnected with his father after two decades, not due to illness, but to confront him about a possible murder. Tim discovered a gun used by their neighbor, Monica, to kill her husband, and learned that Tom had helped her hide the crime because they were having an affair.
Tim firmly believed his father was responsible, but Lucy discovered the real story. During a particularly difficult time, Tim confronted his father, even bringing him a bottle of tequila with the intention of hastening his death. He told his father he hoped his end would be agonizing. Since then, Tim has been working through his anger and trauma in therapy and support groups, and finally addressing these issues with his father feels crucial to his healing. While it’s probable his father is no longer alive, the show The Rookie has presented even more improbable scenarios.
The Rookie debuts new episodes on Mondays at 10 PM on ABC and streams the next day on Hulu.
