The Remake of a 15-Year-Old Russell Crowe Blockbuster Is a Hit on MGM+

A new series on Amazon is currently a huge success, but the story it tells has been popular before. For example, Russell Crowe played the famous outlaw in the 2010 film Robin Hood, which was just one of many adaptations of the classic tale.

A new adaptation of the story, created by Jonathan English and John Glenn, launched on MGM+ on November 2nd. It’s been very well-received by critics – a significant improvement over the previous version by Crowe – and quickly became popular, consistently topping the charts on MGM+ according to FlixPatrol.

New episodes of Robin Hood come out on Sundays. While the show remained number one in the UK and is back on the charts in Germany (currently at #10 as of November 23rd) and Australia (where it’s #4 on Stan), it didn’t hold the top spot domestically on MGM+ this past week. It’s not currently available to stream on Amazon Prime Video, but is performing well elsewhere.

This new take on Robin Hood centers around Jack Patten as Rob Locksley (also known as Robin), the son of a Saxon forester, and Marian, the daughter of a Norman lord. Together, they fight for fairness and liberty. Lauren McQueen plays Marian of Huntingdon, while Alert Rice and Billie Gadsdon portray Rob and Marian in their younger years.

In addition to the main stars, the film Robin Hood also features well-known actors like Sean Bean, who plays the Sheriff of Nottingham, and Connie Nielsen, who previously appeared with Russell Crowe in Gladiator, as Eleanor of Aquitaine.

I’ve been following the buzz around the new series since it dropped earlier this month, and it seems to be resonating with viewers! Right now, critics are giving it a 77% approval rating based on 13 reviews, but audiences seem to love it even more – it’s at 81% on the Popcornmeter. What’s really standing out is the acting, how deeply they explore the character of the famous outlaw, and the fantastic settings and commitment to historical accuracy.

Russell Crowe’s Robin Hood Didn’t Enchant the Critics

The new Robin Hood series is gradually gaining popularity with both critics and viewers, but Russell Crowe’s earlier film adaptation wasn’t as successful. That movie brought Crowe back together with director Ridley Scott, who also directed Gladiator, and featured a strong cast including Cate Blanchett, William Hurt, Mark Strong, and Oscar Isaac.

Despite a famous cast, the adventure film received mixed reviews, with many critics finding it too serious compared to previous Robin Hood adaptations. It currently has a 43% approval rating from critics and 58% from audiences. While the film earned $322.4 million globally – a large amount for most movies – it wasn’t profitable. The hefty $210 million production cost meant it needed to earn $525 million just to cover expenses.

You can currently watch Russell Crowe’s Robin Hood movie on Netflix. For a new take on the story, the Robin Hood series is streaming on MGM+, with fresh episodes released every Sunday.
