The Real Housewives of Orange County Recap: Taking the Cake

Hello everyone, I have some unfortunate news to share. You’re all familiar with the Beef Chart, the one we’ve used all season to follow the conflicts and reasons behind them? Well, it’s no longer with us. Yes, the Beef Chart is dead. This show simply exhausted it. The Beef Chart determined it couldn’t handle any more drama and chose to essentially destroy itself rather than track another feud.

This episode is full of drama! Tamra is upset with Emily because Emily said she didn’t trust her. Then, Emily gets angry at Tamra for planning to talk with Katie. To add to that, Tamra is also mad at Heather for saying she doesn’t trust *her*, but Heather is frustrated that Tamra never considers *her* feelings. Heather is also upset with Gina for saying she doesn’t find her funny, and Gina is mad at Shannon for telling Heather that she feels the same way. Throughout the season, Tamra and Jenn have been feuding – which we’ve been tracking on the “Beef Chart” – and now we need to add that Tamra is angry Jenn followed the member of 98 Degrees (yes, we’re saying the band name now) that Tamra allegedly had a relationship with. Have we covered everything? Is that all the drama for now?

Oh, I nearly forgot – Jenn’s son, Dawson, is having a tough time with both getting tattoos and staying aware. We haven’t seen a bad tattoo decision like this since Tamra’s son Ryan got the word “NUGGET” tattooed on the inside of his lip. Dawson, who is soon starting basic training for the Marines, gets four “7”s tattooed across his chest. He says it’s because he thinks it looks cool, but it also happens to be Jenn’s birthday: July 7, 1977. (Honestly, it’s pretty awesome that every time she’s asked her birthday, it’s “Seven, seven, seventy-seven.” It almost sounds like a spell or a curse!) But he chooses the ugliest possible “7”s, just a straight line across his chest, like a digital clock that’s given up on telling time and even wanting to exist. And then he has something like a mini-seizure right there in the tattoo chair, and they have to wake him up with rubbing alcohol. It was upsetting and frightening, and I really didn’t like it. This, truthfully, was probably the last thing the Beef Chart could handle. It just couldn’t take any more.

Here’s some more drama! Gina is at it again, this time over her taste in music. She claims that, being a millennial, she’s a big fan of 98 Degrees and was secretly hoping Tamra dated one of the members. (Tamra says she definitely could have.) I just hope when Tamra hung out with him, he wasn’t already married to the woman who’s now sending Tamra screenshots of his Instagram. Gina then posted a photo of herself at a 98 Degrees concert. But not back in 1999 when she was a young teen on Long Island! This concert was in 2021 – four years ago! Look, I love nostalgia and going to see bands like Backstreet Boys, ’N Sync, or even NKOTB (if you know, you know), but going to a 98 Degrees concert as an adult? Their song “Because of You” didn’t even reach the top of the charts!

I’m changing the subject to Dawson and Gina just to avoid talking about Tamra’s spring-fling party. Honestly, like with the Beef Chart, I just don’t have the energy to discuss it. So, what else can we talk about? Oh! How about Heather Dubrow, who some people – and I’m being serious – call the funny Housewife. I know that’s not really accurate, but she really showed off her improv abilities when Shannon, after hearing about Tamra supposedly recording her singing and being intimate, asked how anyone could sing and make those kinds of noises simultaneously. Heather completely ran with the idea, giving a detailed and, if not hilarious, at least entertaining response.

I get why the women are so shocked that Heather is taking classes at the Groundlings. She’s not usually a funny person in her daily life. She definitely doesn’t joke around about herself, so it makes sense they’d be surprised. But have they forgotten how she does in confessional? No one delivers lines quite like Heather Paige Kent. She has a knack for emphasizing each word perfectly. Is Heather naturally funny? Not really. But could she be a fantastic comedic actress? Absolutely! I’d cast her in my comedy pilot – it’s about Jan Brady going to college and realizing she wasn’t as awful as Marcia always made her believe. She’d be perfect as an RA who never finished school. Hello, ABC! Where’s my contract?

Let’s talk about Tamra’s party. Everyone goes, except for Katie, who’s in trouble, and Gretchen, who’s busy taking family photos and apparently bonding with a bunny. (Speaking of Gretchen, she saw the photographer’s preview and immediately asked if they were going to heavily edit the pictures – she wanted to look dramatically smoothed out, like a blurry thumbprint with a wig on!) The issue with the party is that Tamra seems to have fallen into a pattern: she gets angry whenever anyone confronts her, and then she dramatically walks away, sometimes even upstairs to avoid everyone. It’s just really repetitive and annoying.

When it comes to Tamra, frustration seems to be the dominant feeling. Her typical strategies aren’t effective anymore; she’s lost her allies, no one is willing to forgive her, and every attempt to fix things just makes the situation worse. It’s possible she doesn’t genuinely want to reconcile with some of these women. You can clearly see she dislikes Jenn and considers her naive, but she’s trying to appear conciliatory for the sake of the show. However, the moment she finds something to use as ammunition, she immediately reverts to her old patterns, and Jenn wisely steps away – or, extending the metaphor, boughs out – because she knows it’s not worth the effort. Tamra isn’t willing to forgive Jenn, they won’t be able to move forward, and nothing anyone does will change Tamra’s stance.

It’s even more upsetting that she’s treating the three people who’ve always been there for her – Emily, Gina, and Heather – terribly. She accuses Gina and Emily of not supporting *her*, even though she claims to support *them*. It doesn’t make any sense! They show their support simply by being present, by even putting on floral dresses and baking cakes in her kitchen, *despite* being yelled at. Anyone else would have left a long time ago. Their support is as valuable as Kim’s Skims briefs are to my low-rise pants. (By the way, congrats to Kim for making such great underwear!) Tamra keeps making these kinds of statements, like when she says Heather doesn’t like her, even though all the evidence proves otherwise.

Here’s what bothers me about how Tamra Judge has been acting lately, and I think the other women feel the same way. I’m honestly not sure if she genuinely believes what she’s saying, or if she’s just saying things to try and win a fight. Is she really upset by all of this, or is she just pretending to be? Does Tamra actually care about any of the other women, or is she more concerned with keeping her role on the show? Is she hurt because she feels like they’ve betrayed her, or is she just feeling cornered and reacting to that?

Her argument with Heather, which concludes the episode, clearly demonstrates this point. Heather is frustrated because she repeatedly shares her feelings with Tamra, but Tamra consistently dismisses them as incorrect. While Tamra might believe Heather is misunderstanding what happened, Heather’s feelings are still valid. As Tamra scolds Heather and declares she’s finished, Heather points out, “This is a perfect illustration – you doing this, always giving up, getting so upset…”

Tamra interrupts and yells, “I’m facing an incredibly tough challenge right now, and you’re not making it any easier.” But what exactly *is* this difficult situation? Is it going to therapy? Or is it related to Teddi Mellencamp’s battle with brain cancer? What is it, and why does she feel justified in her reaction? Last year, Shannon experienced a really difficult time – getting a DUI and then being blackmailed for $75,000 by her ex and his new girlfriend, who also caused drama on the show – and how did Tamra respond? She criticized Shannon, called her a drunk, and sided with Alexis Bellino, who seemed to come with a complimentary prayer card.

Shannon believes Tamra is quick to criticize but struggles with criticism herself, though I disagree. I think Tamra can both deliver and receive harsh comments, but she gets frustrated when others don’t move on as quickly as she does. Currently, everyone is holding onto their hurt feelings, which exasperates Tamra because she’s repeatedly caused pain. This is similar to what Shannon said, but it’s the reverse – Tamra seems unable to empathize with other people’s pain the way she understands her own. Or perhaps she’s become so tough from life experiences that she’s lost the ability to feel pain. I’m not sure. What I do know is that the group’s interactions have completely fallen apart, and the audience feels sorry for Lisa, who just wants to bake cakes but finds herself in Tamra’s kitchen, caught in the middle of endless, confusing arguments – it’s as bewildering to her as looking up at the stars and trying to understand events from millions of years ago.
