The Real Housewives of Orange County Recap: Girl, You Trippin’

Ryan Boyajian, known for being an entrepreneur, having connections with money launderers, having a keen interest in extravagant jackets, and reportedly appreciating “chicken on a stick” (as per Tamra), evidently owns a Cybertruck. It’s not hard to imagine that this man would own such a vehicle, just as it’s easy to guess that Heather Dubrow, known for her love of flashy designer items and Coachella appearances, might don an ostentatious Fendi bucket hat and call the paparazzi from the Sugar Bear Hair pavilion while sipping on a branded cocktail. Unsurprisingly, Ryan is seen washing his Cybertruck in his driveway, as one might expect.

In this episode, we’re fortunate to not have Ryan feature prominently, as there isn’t much substance to his role (a light-hearted nod towards Elon Musk enthusiasts). Interestingly, Heather and Ryan appear to be symbolic opposites in their public stances. In a humorous turn of events, Heather was seen recording a podcast with Dylan Mulvaney, a trans actress who collaborated with Bud Light, causing quite the commotion among Cybertruck owners. Unlike Dylan, who boasts an impressive social media following of 2 million on Instagram and 9.1 million on TikTok, Heather’s follower count is 1.8 million on Instagram and 346,000 on “TikToks dot com” (as Terry calls it). It seems that Dylan is providing a significant boost to Heather’s reach just by being present. The episode may set up a storyline involving Heather expressing discontent with Gretchen over their contrasting views on trans issues, which have been the subject of much fan discussion.

It’s not that Heather never extends an invitation to Gretchen for a sleepover at her lavish Beverly Hills penthouse, complete with a debonair butler named Nate who’s in competition for the Hottie of the Episode Award with J.R., the animal shelter volunteer. J.R., on the other hand, is not a contender; he’s more about scooping up dog poop and playing with adorable canine residents. I must clarify that it’s not Nate or J.R. whom I’m referring to, but rather the rescued dogs themselves. Phew!

Heather exclusively invites Emily and Gretchen for a sleepover, as they’ll be sleeping in canopy beds within her larger living room. This is because Tamra has invited Shannon, Gina, and Jenn on a separate trip to Temecula, which translates to “far too inland” from the Aztec language. This is part of Tamra’s effort to reconcile with Jenn and Shannon, and she wants Gina along as a mediator. In contrast, Heather plans for Emily and Gretchen to join her heading northward, carrying Fireball bottles in their purses and spending an afternoon shopping and dining at Crustacean – a restaurant name that could use a less appetizing nickname, like a bakery called “Moist” or a car dealership named “Tesla”.

Interestingly, Katie was absent during both trips, seemingly as no one wished to film with her. The unfortunate part is that she won’t be compensated for this episode since she wasn’t featured in it. I can understand the editors wanting to avoid revisiting her storyline within the episode. However, a brief explanation or a quick scene showing Katie and Matt at home might have helped clarify her absence, instead of implying that she has been integral to many of this season’s plotlines thus far. Additionally, such an approach would ensure her eligibility for her episode wage.

During Gretchen and Emily’s sleepover, despite their exciting trips, only two significant events transpired. On their stroll through Rodeo Drive, they encountered a paparazzo named Shaune, an unusual collection of letters forming a word with phonetic meaning. Shaune asserted that Heather did not call the paparazzi as many believe, including myself. She claimed it was merely a random shot. While it’s plausible that Rodeo Drive is a popular spot for paparazzi and they might possess industry insights, I still suspect Heather orchestrated contact with the photographers. I cannot help but stand firm on this seemingly insignificant point. The encounter appears too calculated, too staged, too probable. Furthermore, it’s hard to trust someone named Shaune, especially when her parents seem unfamiliar with proper human naming conventions.

Another point of discussion was whether Heather fears Tamra, a belief that Emily appears to share and has apparently convinced Jenn and Gretchen. However, Heather asserts she’s not scared and effectively argues that she is the only one who directly addressed Tamra about her inappropriate behavior during their trip to New Orleans. (It’s worth noting that Gretchen’s stylist misunderstood this term as “out of Polly Pocket”, which was a common phrase used by Gretchen throughout this season in her confessional scenes.) If Heather truly feels scared, why didn’t anyone else have the courage to challenge her?

It’s quite likely that Heather has a strong influence on Tamra and they’ve worked together for a long time, allowing her to anticipate what might upset Tamra. Fancy Pants usually values decorum, and I suspect what others might perceive as fear is actually Heather trying to manage and please Tamra to prevent any more controversial incidents like the one where Tamra made someone act inappropriately under the influence. Unlike other women on the show, Heather seems to have less risk of losing her position. Losing her job on the show wouldn’t be a significant hardship for her, considering she has a penthouse with multiple properties and numerous designer items to fall back on. Jenn, however, might struggle to make rent if she loses this as her only source of income.

In this rephrased version, the sentence maintains its original meaning but is more easily understood:

It’s only fitting that the discussion during the other trip revolves around Tamra, who takes center stage in Katie’s unexpected absence. As soon as Shannon got the invitation, I could sense trouble brewing. Rather than declining the invite outright, she shows up with two personalized suitcases – one brimming with pasta, serving platters, muffin tins, a crock pot, three dented cans of SpaghettiOs, some tomatoes from her neighbors, and a chef’s hat. One might wonder if she planned to make homemade Uncrustables.

Shannon is enjoying herself immensely during her trip inland, proudly displaying her missing tooth and reminiscing about her father’s desire to purchase an avocado farm for residential development. This move appears to be an attempt to escape the strained relationship with Tamra. Given Shannon’s history of taking a long time to forgive, as seen when she struggled to reconcile with Vicki following the Brooks Ayers controversy, it’s clear that Shannon isn’t as involved in the show’s drama as some of the other women might be. While she can certainly manipulate events behind the scenes like anyone else, it seems that for Shannon, this is all genuine life rather than scripted television, leading her to adhere more to real-life values instead of TV rules. This authenticity, I believe, makes her an intriguing character, but it may cause friction with fellow cast members who prefer a smoother narrative to keep the storyline progressing.

As the grand finale of the episode approaches, there’s been quite a buzz surrounding Tamra unveiling the long-lost Phatty Photo. Over the past few weeks, the happenings between Gretchen and Katie have kept it hidden. During our dinner gathering, Tamra casually brings up the topic, leaving Jenn puzzled as to why she did so. Tamra explains that she wanted to demonstrate her transformation, but Heather had twisted it into something malicious, insinuating Tamra shamed her for being overweight. To be honest, the photo itself is a sight to behold-or rather, not behold-it’s dreadful in every aspect, as if cursed by the devil himself. If I may say so, it deserves nothing less than a ride in the Cybertruck with Ryan as its penance.

Jenn concurs with Tamra that there has been a transformation in her, and she believes this change is for the better. Previously, Jenn might have been a reserved woman carrying some extra weight, but now she appears to be more self-assured, secure, and aesthetically pleasing, according to California’s most Republican county’s beauty standards. Jenn suggests that Tamra shared the photo because it was Tamra who felt insecure and needed validation. It is amusing when Housewives (and their admirers, along with critics) attempt to uncover profound reasons behind Tamra’s actions. However, the truth is simpler: Tamra did this intentionally to be cruel to Jenn, whom she held grudges against and disliked. Even a beginner in psychology could grasp that concept within a day.

In a simpler and more conversational way:

Tamra admits her mistake and acknowledges it was thoughtless, but things are different now because no one seems willing to accept her apologies. Her habit of offending, then apologizing, and repeating this pattern appears to be unsuccessful. The damage she’s caused is too deep for people to continue forgiving her so easily. As Jenn questions Tamra’s sincerity, it’s clear that Tamra is getting increasingly irritated. When Jenn asks what she can do differently, Jenn replies, “Grow up.” Essentially, that’s the crux of the matter. Everyone wants Tamra to move past her repetitive behavior and mature. We all make mistakes and hurt our friends at times, but then we learn from them and try to change for the better. However, Tamra keeps repeating her mistakes despite claiming she has changed, leaving people doubting her genuine transformation.

At last, Tamra reaches her breaking point. “I’ve apologized,” she says, “What more do you need from me? My blood?” Indeed, that’s exactly what they seek – not literally but symbolically. They expect her to pay a price for all her actions; they want the penance to match the wrongdoing. They long to witness her pain accompanying her repentance. They envision her kneeling on a cold church floor and reciting 150 million Hail Marys. Truthfully, she deserves it. This time, Tamra won’t be let off lightly, and she resents it.

In my perspective, engaging with Shannon can be quite challenging, as she often steers the discussion towards her own issues. It’s unfortunate because Tamra, in Shannon’s words, seems to sink lower than others in our group, and we’re expected to bear it. Shannon’s persistence with Tamra isn’t just stubbornness; it feels like she’s being subjected to some sort of collective penance for her past actions.

When Shannon tries to defend herself against the accusations Tamra made about her last season, Tamra escalates the situation, claiming that Shannon is just as cruel behind everyone’s backs and gets drunk, saying hurtful things about us. This isn’t a smart move on Tamra’s part, as it only adds fuel to the fire of the problem she created by publicly calling out Shannon’s drinking.

To make matters worse, Tamra then involves Gina in this mess, expressing concerns about Shannon’s drinking. This was the moment when all the energy and tension in the room seemed to vanish, leaving behind a deafening silence. It was as if the words and conflicts we had were sucked into a vortex, extinguishing the candles on our table and the chandelier above us. The silence spread out, enveloping the dusty vineyard. It felt like a cyclone, spinning around and around, worsening with each rotation, until it became a tempest that could level a town or dissipate with a single sigh.
