Let’s be honest, keeping up with all the new shows Bravo is releasing is exhausting! It’s tough for dedicated fans to balance everything with their everyday lives. While it’s fun to watch, the combination of shows like Ladies of London, RHORI, and Summer House can be a bit overwhelming. But as a big fan of RHOA, we can’t let all the drama overshadow our favorite show! Let’s take a break from trying to solve every mystery and focus on supporting the Atlanta cast.
I always go into each new season hoping it will recapture the magic of this classic show. Last year’s attempt was promising until some new and overly aggressive personalities caused things to fall apart. But the season premiere gives me hope we’re finally heading in the right direction – and we might even see Nene back on screen soon with the upcoming Ultimate Girls Trip! Right now, RHOA has a chance to be a reliably comforting show, something the current season of RHOBH just hasn’t delivered on.
This episode isn’t particularly dramatic, especially since there’s no major scandal brewing at the start of the season. Though, Porsha revealing her same-sex relationship isn’t exactly a surprise to longtime fans. Instead, the show returns to familiar territory: questionable boyfriends, Phaedra’s shaky honesty, and Cynthia’s signature stoic expression and questioning attitude. Hopefully, this signals a return to what makes RHOA great! We’ll see!
The show appears to be going back to its original formula, blending familiar cast members with new faces to signal a fresh start that captures the spirit of modern Atlanta. To fill the roles left by two problematic cast members from last season, they’ve added K. Michelle, a reality TV veteran and successful R&B singer, and Pinky Cole, a well-known businesswoman. Honestly, I don’t usually watch reality TV outside of Bravo, so I don’t know much about K. Michelle. But that lets me evaluate her performance as a Housewife fairly, which I think she deserves, especially since she’s starting a new career path as a country artist – and that endorsement from Beyoncé is a big deal! However, some people questioned Bravo’s decision to cast someone from VH1’s Love & Hip Hop, particularly after last season when viewers felt RHOA was starting to resemble K’s previous show.
I think some of the criticism stems from prejudice, but I get why people were worried. Viewers want to see fun and genuine connections, not overly dramatic, manufactured conflict. However, K. Michelle doesn’t seem to be contributing to that problem. She actually pointed out that Porsha’s dinner party felt like a Tyler Perry show – and she was right to do so. This dinner was the first time everyone gathered as a group, and Porsha hosted at the large house she got in her divorce, which made it a perfect backdrop for the kind of over-the-top drama you often see in Tyler Perry productions.
Many viewers have noticed Simon’s continued presence – both physically through clever editing and emotionally – throughout Porsha’s new palace. This feeling is amplified by Porsha now publicly dating someone new. This new man seems like a temporary distraction, as it’s clear Porsha’s heart lies elsewhere. As Lisa Nicole from Married to Medicine put it, it makes you want to ask, “What about her relationship with a woman?” But that storyline will likely unfold naturally, and I admire Porsha for embracing her sexuality at her own pace. For now, we’ll play along and see where this new relationship goes.
Porsha wasn’t the only one stretching the rules about bringing a partner. Cynthia and Drew both included their significant others via FaceTime – Cynthia even taped fake dreadlocks to her phone to mimic her boyfriend’s look, and Drew’s friend from last season, Blackk, stayed on the call the whole time. Kelli showed up with someone the other women jokingly referred to as a casual fling, seemingly enjoying her post-divorce freedom. Phaedra brought a man who resembled her ex from Married to Medicine, or at least looked like he came from the same casting call as Porsha’s date. Only K. Michelle, Pinky, and Angela brought actual, established partners. While I generally don’t like seeing a lot of men on screen, I enjoy Charles Oakley’s blunt personality, and it’s good to meet the new cast members’ families.
While a lot of talk centered on K. Michelle’s conflicts on the show, I found Pinky and her husband to be the ones who felt out of place. I don’t mean this as criticism, but Pinky, the owner of Atlanta’s Slutty Vegan, seemed surprisingly down-to-earth compared to the other cast members. As Kelli observed, even her outfit showed she was entering a different social scene. Was her style a little different from what we usually see on the Atlanta Housewives? Yes, but she’s just a regular person who doesn’t have a wardrobe full of over-the-top outfits yet. She did her best with what she had. Pinky reminds me of some relatable women I knew in college, and that’s not a bad thing. Having someone more normal on the show actually balances things out and can create funny moments, like seeing an everyday person react to all the drama, similar to the show Jury Duty.
Okay, so Pinky might seem like an unexpected addition to the Real Housewives crew, but she actually already has connections – she’s met Shamea, Phaedra, K. Michelle, and Kelli. Thankfully, Phaedra, Shamea, and K are all on board with her joining the show, but Kelli? She’s already questioning whether Pinky’s a true ‘girls’ girl,’ which I’m predicting means drama is brewing between those two. Honestly, Kelli might want to tread carefully when it comes to throwing shade – I heard through the grapevine (thanks, Drew!) that Nana’s Chicken and Waffles isn’t doing so great, while Pinky’s Slutty Vegan is expanding with franchising! Talk about a power imbalance.
Porsha’s dinner party is full of awkwardness and sets the stage for future conflicts. Kelli is clearly avoiding Pinky, and the tension between Porsha and Shamea – who aren’t speaking after a difficult year and a recent fight over text messages – is thick. Shamea is visibly uncomfortable being in Porsha’s home, despite Porsha’s attempts to be a gracious host. Drew quickly stirs up trouble, as usual, by asking Shamea about her husband. Shamea, already on edge, responds with a pointed comment about Drew’s own commitments.
After the men stepped out, the women got into the real issues. Angela asked Shamea and Porsha to share how their friendship was going, but both were careful and didn’t reveal much – not surprisingly, given their complicated history. When that conversation stalled, Cynthia steered the discussion to the ongoing tension between Shamea and Drew. Drew didn’t think Shamea’s apology video was sincere, pointing out that Shamea seemed to continue blaming her even while apologizing. This led Shamea to accuse Drew of telling Phaedra she didn’t fully believe Angela’s evidence from last year’s drama with June Bug.
Phaedra supports Shamea’s story, confirming that Drew did approach her after the reunion to express her concerns. Angela insists she has proof, claiming someone at a Hawks game told her Phaedra was the one stirring up trouble. Phaedra then acts like a lawyer, arguing that security footage and audio from the game will prove Angela is not telling the truth. It’s unclear how Phaedra would have obtained clear recordings of a private conversation at a basketball game – and she’s likely making it up. This argument is the final straw for K. Michelle, who immediately gets up and walks away, clearly regretting her decision to be involved. A clip from next week’s episode shows her looking directly at the camera, hilariously questioning why she signed up for the show. In a private interview, K. Michelle admitted she initially thought the event would be a glamorous, upscale gathering, filled with fancy dresses, real diamonds, and champagne. But she quickly realized this wasn’t the Beverly Hills lifestyle she expected – this is a different kind of Bravo show!
Okay, so the drama felt a little… stalled this week. They basically put off dealing with those tapes indefinitely, and Kelli, who’s suddenly besties with Shamea, kept stirring the pot with Porsha. Porsha, thankfully, decided she wasn’t having it and steered the conversation toward being a good hostess. The night ended on a seriously weird note with that forced kiss with her… let’s just say, strategically-placed boyfriend. Honestly, it was a pretty calm start to the season, and maybe that’s exactly what we needed given everything going on with Bravo right now. I’m still rooting for these ladies, though – I have faith in my peaches!
