Thomas Jane, who played The Punisher in the 2004 film, recently shared that despite appreciating the chance to play the character, he believed he wasn’t the right fit for the role. He didn’t return for the sequel, Punisher: War Zone, with Ray Stevenson taking over, but he did revisit the character in a short fan film called The Punisher: Dirty Laundry directed by Phil Joanou.
Thomas Jane on why he was ‘miscast’ in 2004’s The Punisher
Thomas Jane recently told Comic Book Movie that he’d love to revisit his role as the Punisher from the 2004 movie, potentially in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars films. He shared his enthusiasm, recalling how much he enjoyed making a short Punisher film called ‘Dirty Laundry’ and how grateful he was to be a part of the character’s world, as he’s a lifelong comic book fan.
Jane was asked if he felt any jealousy or pride seeing Jon Bernthal take on the role of the Punisher in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, considering his own previous portrayal. He responded that he believed he wasn’t the right fit for the part, specifically because the character’s Italian background didn’t align with his own.
Jane pointed out that Frank Castle had black hair and a very different background than her own. She explained that he was born in the 1970s as a reaction against the influence of the Italian mafia, which had briefly become very powerful around the time The Godfather movie was released.
Jane explained, “Frank was the solution to that problem. His name was Francis Castiglione, but that wasn’t me. I completely changed my appearance – I even dyed my hair black – to become someone else.”
The actor from Boogie Nights expressed his happiness that Jon Bernthal is now playing the Punisher, believing Bernthal is a better fit for the part. He said he enjoyed his time playing the character and did his best, but ultimately feels he wasn’t the right person for the role.
