The Pitt Season 2, Episode 13 Recap: Robby & Dana’s Fight Escalates

Be warned, this article reveals key plot points from the season 2 finale of The Pitt. This week’s episode featured a continuing conflict between Robby and Dana, and showed a worsening of Robby’s mental health. The staff at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center are all under immense pressure, with many working late to convert the hospital’s records from paper to digital format. As the end of their shifts approaches, the doctors are increasingly stressed and on edge.

The season 2 finale of The Pitt is approaching after a difficult episode 13. Several characters faced major challenges: Ogilvie considered leaving emergency medicine after a patient’s death, Mohan struggled with a returning patient, Langdon doubted her abilities, and Robby had a heated argument with Dana, revealing he’s not coping well with stress and past trauma. Here’s a recap of the key issues as the season nears its end.

Robby Revealed More About His Mental State While Fighting With Dana

Dana and Robby had a heated argument in the season 2 finale of The Pitt, and things didn’t improve this week. Robby’s behavior continued to worsen, leading Dana to pull him aside for a serious conversation. She urged him to take a break and start his sabbatical, but he wouldn’t agree, believing that PTMC wouldn’t be able to function without him.

During a conversation, Robby shared that his mother left him when he was a child. This explains his earlier statement in season one of The Pitt about being raised by his grandmother. After their argument, Robby also hinted to Dana that he might not come back to PTMC after his time away. This, along with other signs, suggests Robby is struggling with his mental health and may be having passive suicidal thoughts.

This week, Robby claimed Dr. Al-Hashimi showed the same hesitation while treating a child with asthma as she did with Baby Jane Doe earlier in the season. Robby believes this proves she’s not capable of leading the emergency room while he’s away. It’s currently unclear what Robby plans to do with this information or why Dr. Al-Hashimi seems to freeze up when treating children.

Duke’s Lung Condition Is Bad & He Can’t Get Surgery Until After The Weekend

The argument between Dana and Robby started after they received upsetting news about Duke, Robby’s friend and motorcycle mechanic. Robby had previously stayed with Duke at the hospital until he could get a scan of his lungs. The results came back during episode 13 of The Pitt season 2, and the outlook wasn’t good. While The Pitt didn’t specify Duke’s condition, Robby’s conversation with a doctor made it clear it was serious.

During a discussion about Duke’s CT scan, Robby described him as being in critical condition, explaining that something in his chest could burst and be fatal. Despite this serious threat to Duke’s health, the surgeon Robby consulted with couldn’t schedule surgery for a week. The upcoming Fourth of July holiday and the need for multiple consultations meant Duke would have to wait several days for treatment.

The results of Duke’s CT scan are concerning, but they might actually help Robby. Robby needs to stay at the hospital long enough to tell Duke the news personally, as he feels a responsibility to do so as a friend. Dana now knows Robby is struggling with suicidal thoughts, which could give her the time she needs to help him before he acts on his plans during his time off. At the very least, Duke’s health situation might keep Robby from leaving until filming for the second season of The Pitt is finished.

Mohan Struggled With Orlando’s Condition & Finding A Fellowship

In the season 2 finale of The Pitt, Dr. Mohan was confronted by a returning patient, Orlando. Orlando, who has diabetes, had previously left the hospital before his condition, caused by ketosis, could be stabilized. He was brought back by ambulance after a fall at work, and his health had severely declined. The fall left him with a very low chance of survival and an even smaller chance of making a full recovery.

Seeing Orlando back at the hospital really floored me – and Mohan, clearly. I was watching, and it was tough. Then, while they were dealing with him, the head neurologist showed up in the ER and offered Mohan a chance to help with a really complex surgery. He turned it down, which surprised me, and Javadi stepped in instead. To top it all off, Whitaker then had to tell him that his patient with Ogilvie hadn’t made it. Honestly, episode 13 of The Pitt season 2 was just a relentlessly difficult hour for the guy. It was brutal to watch.

Things are getting harder for Mohan, as her search for a fellowship isn’t going well either. Crus, a night shift doctor, told her the ultrasound fellowship was extremely competitive and that she herself had a lot more experience, which led Mohan to discard her application. Between the pressure of her patients and the struggle to continue her career, Mohan is starting to feel overwhelmed.

Ogilvie Lost A Patient, But Whitaker Acted As A Mentor

Mr. Green, the kidney stone patient Dr. Ogilvie assisted with surgery on, unfortunately died during the operation. Dr. Ogilvie was deeply affected by this loss. Dr. Whitaker found him almost unresponsive in the hospital’s ambulance bay after learning of Mr. Green’s death. After encouraging him, Dr. Whitaker persuaded Dr. Ogilvie not to quit emergency medicine right away, suggesting he go home and consider his future after getting some rest.

During their conversation, Whitaker shared a meaningful quote from the first season of The Pitt. He explained that when a patient passes away, one should “try to accept it and find balance.” This advice was originally given to Whitaker by Robby after Whitaker lost his first patient, and Whitaker later returned the favor, offering Robby the same words of comfort during his difficult moment in the temporary morgue.

Mel Helped Langdon Realize He Still Belongs In The Emergency Room

In season 2, episode 13 of The Pitt, Langdon experienced a setback in his confidence. While trying to help a child with a serious asthma attack, he recommended intubation. Unfortunately, the procedure caused the child’s lung to collapse, and his colleagues explained that intubation could be fatal for asthma patients. This mistake, following a difficult day, deeply affected Langdon’s self-assurance.

Fortunately, Langdon and Mel mirrored a conversation they had in season 1 of The Pitt. This time, Mel reassured Langdon that he was a capable emergency room doctor and would have eventually recognized the intubation wasn’t effective. In season 1, episode 9 of The Pitt, Langdon had similarly comforted Mel, telling her she could handle the pressures of emergency medicine. It was a thoughtful moment when Mel was able to offer him the same support in season 2 of The Pitt.
