Every workplace, real or imagined, benefits from having a Dana-like figure. Dana, our charge nurse, is not only managing tasks effectively but also looking after her colleagues. Notice how seamlessly she intervenes to prevent a situation spiraling out of control for Robby, who’s caught in a tricky conversation with Gloria (or Pink Blazer, as we know her) about the potential outsourcing of our E.D.’s management to a contract company. If Robby can’t boost patient satisfaction scores, Gloria plans to sell off the hospital. Robby might improve those numbers if more staff were hired, but instead of letting him say something that could lead to trouble, Dana steps in to defuse the situation.
Shortly after, I find myself approaching Dr. Mel King, who seems quite rattled due to the possibility that Ginger’s daughter and caretaker could have abandoned her mother. In these situations, I understand when to offer comfort to my colleagues. I reassure Mel that even if she isn’t sure what to say to Ginger at this moment, her patient needs her. “You can do it,” I tell her, and indeed, a few moments with the Mother of Residents and a calming session on her lava lamp app seem to put Mel back on track. After all, she is Ginger’s doctor, and she can take care of her until they locate Rita. To top it off, a gentle check-in with her special needs sister, Becca, only strengthens my belief that Mel is truly exceptional – she’s certainly one of the best among us here at The Pitt.
To be honest, I’m hesitant to rate these characters just yet, as I’ve grown fond of them all. We still have Dana’s exceptional performance in this episode to look forward to. She shares a heartwarming moment with Heather Collins who, after winning $850 from the stolen ambulance pool, is considering spending it on an extravagant stroller. Given that only Dana seems to be aware of Heather’s pregnancy, she encourages her to splurge, saying she deserves it. And so, Heather places the order. Dana truly cares for everyone. However, it’s concerning that Heather is experiencing strange pains and beginning to embrace this pregnancy, which I fear will lead to a tragic ending. I’ve seen my fair share of television dramas, and I won’t let The Pitt think it can pull the wool over my eyes, alright? Prove me wrong, show!
Heather’s shift isn’t a walk in the park, and things become more intense around noon. Apart from an unusual procedure involving a teenager’s testicles (as the term suggests), Heather is mainly occupied with the aftermath of the abortion case from the previous episode. Kristi, not Lynette who was impersonating her mom, spends most of the hour arguing about their predicament. We don’t hear their discussions, but we learn the outcome when they suddenly exit the room, and Eloise tells Heather that Kristi will not be having an abortion, and they are leaving immediately. Heather asks Kristi if this is her decision, to which Kristi responds negatively. Kristi deeply regrets the pregnancy, but as a minor, she has limited options. It doesn’t help when Robby points out that if only Heather had followed Dr. Abbott’s fetal measurements, Kristi would have been discharged without her mom being able to prevent her from taking the abortion pills. While we all might have thought it, Robby, it’s unhelpful to bring it up again.
In a bid to prolong the discussion, Heather spots a minor chance when Kristi experiences morning sickness and provides her with anti-nausea medication before she leaves. However, Heather is unaware that Kristi will use this time to lock herself in the bathroom and refuse to leave with her mother, leading to a heated argument between the two sisters. This escalates to such an extent that Eloise shoves Heather in an attempt to maintain peace. Although Heather isn’t hurt severely, she has had enough of the chaos. The story concludes on a chaotic note, leaving us to find out how Heather handles this family dispute next week.
In this episode, Heather appears unaffected thus far, but one of our doctors, Dr. Garcia, sustains an injury. I’m eager to learn more about Dr. Garcia. She exudes competence at her job, often antagonizes Langdon, and yet manages to flirt openly with interns in public settings. She would undoubtedly fit well on the set of “Grey’s Anatomy”. Despite her abrasive demeanor, one could imagine she’d secretly enjoy the chaos there.
In a turn of events, 40-something dad Silas is admitted after falling from a ladder during home renovations, suffering from a minor to major hemothorax due to crushed ribs. He requires a chest tube, and this presents an opportunity for Trinity Santos, who has been courting Dr. Garcia’s attention during her shift. The situation aligns perfectly with Trinity’s dreams, as she is assigned to work under the experienced Dr. Garcia in treating Silas, who needs a chest tube. Excitedly, Trinity requests Garcia’s permission to perform the procedure, and Garcia grants it, marking a significant moment for Trinity’s career.
In the heart of the operation room, I make a swift slice, but unfortunately, my scalpel slips, landing right into Garcia’s foot. Impressively, he carries on with the procedure, showing true grit and determination. However, he boots me off the task, opting for Whitaker instead. Not only do I miss out on placing the chest tube, but I also manage to irritate my key hospital ally. Amidst his stitching, Garcia, the man of many talents, advises the intern that there’s a delicate balance between self-assurance and arrogance, and it’s high time I get my act together. It’s worth noting that this isn’t the first doctor to have this chat with yours truly!
At exactly noon, Trinity finds two positive aspects in her situation. Instead of being overwhelmed by her mistake, she concentrates on the case of Silas. This diligence leads her to observe an unusual growth in his breast tissue, which might indicate alcoholism, a pituitary tumor, or some other hormonal problem – all potential causes of his fall. She shares this discovery with Robby, and he is duly impressed; it’s indeed a brilliant observation.
In simpler terms,
The advantage here is that Trinity’s awkward moment means she and the other newbies on shift are now on an even playing field when it comes to banter. Previously, Trinity had been teasing them harshly, which often felt more hurtful than funny. Now, Javadi and Whitaker can return the jokes in kind. It’s clear that Trinity is aware of this change too, as she called them “fellow losers” when walking away from their conversation. This shift in dynamics is intriguing because it shows how much Trinity wants to be friends with Javadi and Whitaker, yet struggles to do so appropriately. Despite the early stages of their relationship, it’s heartening to see these three interacting more positively. It reminds me a bit of the phrase from ‘Lost’, “Live together or die alone,” which could also apply in a hospital setting.
Discharge Papers
Nick Bradley’s brain scan showed no blood flow, confirming he is brain-dead. Robby shares this news with Lily and John in a private room. This time, they seem to understand. However, when the topic of organ donation is brought up by a family support specialist, Lily becomes emotional. Robby understands that it was too early to discuss organ donation. Once more, the Bradley family story leaves me in tears. Can I ever find tranquility?
Robby and Cass strongly disagree over handling the case of the young man labeled as an “incel” (though we’re advised not to use that term). When Cass pressures her superior again about contacting the police regarding David’s situation, Robby vows to speak with Mom Teresa one more time. True to his word, he succeeds in convincing Teresa to meet with a therapist. Perhaps this is progress, but it seems likely that discussions between the two doctors over the best course of action for David won’t end here.
A program that leaves you needing to search up details about testicular torsion, brain parasites, and the questionable practice of using silicone caulk for butt injections within the same installment can be quite intriguing, if not a bit unsettling or mind-boggling!
As soon as conversation about lunch began on this Pittsburgh-based show, I instinctively felt in my core that Primanti Bros would make an appearance.
