The buzz is all around the latest gross-out medical series on Max titled “The Pitt“, headlined by Noah Wyle. In legal terms, there’s a lot of discussion about how the program compares to Wyle’s previous medical drama stint, “ER“. Interestingly, Michael Crichton’s widow, Sherry, has taken legal action against Warner Bros. Discovery, showrunner R. Scott Gemmill, producer John Wells, and actor Noah Wyle, claiming a breach of contract.
To begin with, what sets “The Pitt” apart from “ER”? Well, it’s a 24-style series where each hour of TV equates to an hour in real life, following one 15-hour shift of senior attending doctor Dr. Michael “Robby” Rabinavitch (Wyle). Unlike ER, it doesn’t have a score and the content is more graphic due to streaming platforms’ permissiveness. Furthermore, the acting demands placed on Wyle are significantly different.
Wyle stated at Warner Bros. Television press day that this acting exercise is unlike anything he’s done before. He hasn’t considered any similarities or differences to other characters he’s played. For him, keeping up the same, or even escalating, level of tension as events take a turn for the worse in this role has been an entirely fresh challenge. Wyle describes it as gradually increasing pressure, layer by layer, detail by detail, much like building a pressure cooker. It involves managing levels of fatigue and learning to compartmentalize issues that need to be kept separate. This process, according to him, is a fascinating psychological exploration of one man enduring the worst day of his life.
In terms of scriptwriting, there’s been a significant shift between the old and new shows by Wyle, primarily due to the growing sophistication of TV viewers. As the television landscape has been inundated with medical, legal, and crime procedurals, many once-charming tropes have lost their luster. Essentially, people are so accustomed to narrative devices, tropes, and patterns that it’s necessary, out of respect for them, to raise the bar. On The Pitt, the writers frequently draw from Dr. Joe Sachs, a consulting doctor who seems to have an endless supply of gruesome medical stories, often referred to as his “tickle trunk.” According to Wyle, “he never runs out.
