Lately, there’s been one show everyone’s been talking about, texting their friends each week to make sure they’ve seen the latest episode. It’s a really emotional series – it’ll make you cry, cheer, and laugh, sometimes all at once – and it’s quickly become one of the most popular new dramas. It stars a well-known actor from a similar show decades ago, tackles important issues, and is full of lovable, intelligent characters. That show is The Pitt.
According to Flix Patrol, The Pitt is currently the most popular show on HBO Max, and it’s held that spot for quite some time. With the second season coming to an end and fans wondering about Season 3 – which won’t include Dr. Samira Mohan (Supriya Ganesh) – it’s worth recognizing how The Pitt has changed the way we experience television.
‘The Pitt’ Might Be Encouraging Faster Releases for Streaming Series

I absolutely loved Season 1 of The Pitt when it came out from January to April 2025, so I was thrilled – and honestly a little surprised – to hear it would be back so soon! Season 2 is set to start in January 2026, only about a year after we first got to experience all the drama, heartache, and genuine moments at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center. It’s funny, but I think The Pitt has really changed expectations – now, it feels like fans actually want streaming shows to come back faster than ever before!
Several TV shows are now releasing new seasons much faster than before. For example, Season 2 of Paradise came out in late January 2026, just over a year after Season 1 premiered in January 2025. The Netflix thriller The Hunting Wives also plans to release its second season in the summer of 2026, following its debut in July 2025. This is a big change, as fans used to wait two or three years for new seasons of popular shows like Ginny & Georgia and Wednesday. While Squid Game Season 3 arrived relatively quickly in June 2025 after Season 2 ended in December 2024, there was still a significant gap between its first and second seasons.
As a critic, I’ve been following the conversation around annual returns for successful shows, and HBO and Max’s content chief, Casey Bloys, has definitely hinted at it a few times. Just recently, in a January 2026 chat with Deadline, he specifically brought up The Pitt as a potential example.
We’re aiming to make this an annual event. A key reason we wanted to create this show was to be able to bring it back every year, and that’s a really important consideration.
In a recent interview with Variety, HBO and Max chief content officer Casey Bloys discussed how The Pitt is influencing future dramas on the networks. He explained they’re looking for shows with high production value and multiple seasons. As of November 2025, HBO was developing two pilot episodes: How to Survive Without Me, a family drama from Greg Berlanti, and American Blue, a police procedural.
Releasing seasons more quickly has some benefits. It’s simpler to follow character development and plotlines when there isn’t a long gap between seasons. Plus, viewers are more likely to stay engaged with a show if they know new episodes arrive annually. Now that we’ve seen some shows can be produced faster, it’s even more annoying when others take so long.
Like previous seasons of The Pitt, Season 2 was also released one episode per week, rather than all at once. Though some viewers aren’t thrilled with this approach, it’s changing how we experience television. The weekly releases encourage us to slow down and focus on the characters and their stories. Instead of quickly finishing a season and asking friends if they’ve caught up, people are now tuning in each week and having more extended discussions. The detailed fan theories surrounding the Season 2 finale and Robby’s journey wouldn’t have happened with an instant release; instead, viewers eagerly anticipate each new episode to see if their predictions come true and continue engaging with the show’s characters and plot.
‘The Pitt’ Season 2 Finale Is Being Shown in Some Movie Theaters

The season finale of The Pitt will be shown at 10 Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas on Monday, April 13, 2026. While not all fans of the HBO Max medical drama will be able to see Robby’s story on the big screen, it’s a really cool opportunity. Following the example of the Stranger Things Season 5 finale, which was also shown in theaters, this could become a more common way to release season finales.
While The Pitt is quite different from a show like the sci-fi series on Netflix, and watching doctors at work isn’t the same as seeing monsters from the Upside Down, it’s a cool idea to think about watching more TV seasons or series finales in a movie theater. It’s also great that the finale of a character-focused drama like The Pitt gets as much attention as the ending of a big show like Stranger Things.
As more streaming series return annually and release episodes weekly instead of all at once, movie theaters might start showing them too. While it won’t work for every show, the idea of fans watching a season finale together in a theater – like some fans did with The Pitt‘s Season 2 ending – is appealing. The Season 2 finale of Paradise was packed with action, surprises, and emotional scenes, and would have been fantastic to experience on the big screen. It’s great that The Pitt is getting this treatment in a few Alamo theaters, and hopefully, more TV fans will have the chance to enjoy their favorite shows communally in theaters soon.
