Fans of Jane Austen can look forward to a new take on the classic story of Pride and Prejudice with The Other Bennet Sister, arriving on BritBox May 6th. BritBox has successfully adapted Austen’s work before, notably with Sanditon, which was developed from an incomplete novel and aired for three seasons.
As a huge Pride and Prejudice fan, I’m really excited about this new series! We’ve seen lots of adaptations, but The Other Bennet Sister is different. It tells the story through Mary’s eyes, which is so interesting! It’s cool that they’re giving a voice to a character who doesn’t usually get much attention in Austen’s novel.
What The Other Bennet Sister Is Based On & About

The 10-part series, The Other Bennet Sister, is based on Janice Hadlow’s novel of the same name, which offers a fresh take on characters from Jane Austen’s stories. The show starts by revisiting the events of Pride and Prejudice, but this time told from the point of view of Mary Bennet, the often-forgotten middle sister.
Mary is often depicted as unremarkable – shy, clumsy in social situations, and overly concerned with appearing successful, though in a shallow way. The trailer for the film emphasizes this, with Mary herself admitting she lacks the beauty, charm, or vitality of her sisters, and constantly feels overshadowed by them.
Beginning here, The Other Bennet Sister takes a different path than Austen’s original story, focusing on Mary’s journey to find herself and experience new adventures. She ventures to London and the Lake District, making her own way in society during the Regency period and finding a love story that wasn’t present in the classic novel.
The show gives Mary the spotlight and depth that Jane Austen didn’t, turning her from a supporting character into the main hero of the story. It also adds plenty of humor and modern touches while still staying true to the historical period.
A brief scene in the trailer shows Mary surprising everyone just by wearing glasses—a small gesture that represents her taking control and challenging what people expect from her. This is similar to how Greta Gerwig and Florence Pugh reimagined Amy March in the 2019 film Little Women, giving a character who was often overlooked or criticized a fresh perspective, earning her respect and showcasing her strength.
“The Other Bennet Sister” brings Mary Bennet to life, giving a fresh perspective on Austen’s beloved stories. The novel both highlights a character often overlooked and adds new layers of humor and romance to the world of Pride and Prejudice. Readers who enjoy Austen’s work, or engaging historical fiction with strong characters, will appreciate this story that finally gives a voice to someone previously in the shadows.
The Other Bennet Sister Could Be The Next Great Period Drama

As a period drama fan, I think The Other Bennet Sister has everything it needs to be really special, and it’s doing something genuinely smart. So many recent shows in this genre have felt… predictable. But this one takes a character who’s usually just in the background and gives her a real story, a voice, and a chance to drive the plot. It’s a fresh take that I think modern audiences are really going to appreciate – we want more than just the usual tropes!
Shows like Bridgerton have demonstrated that audiences enjoy historical dramas that combine old-fashioned settings with modern humor and attitudes. The Other Bennet Sister follows this trend, mixing the proper manners of the Regency era with a smart, funny voice and moments where characters seem to acknowledge they’re in a story, creating a viewing experience that feels both genuine and very enjoyable.
With its beautiful historical setting, focus on female characters, and lively humor, the series should please both fans of Jane Austen and those who enjoy engaging, character-focused historical dramas. The story isn’t limited to one place or family; it explores a much wider world.
The story follows Mary as she travels from her family home to London and the Lake District, filled with exciting adventures and blossoming romance. It offers a fresh take on Regency England, showcasing a more lively and humorous side. The show embraces Mary’s social awkwardness and funny mistakes, creating a lighter feel than typical period dramas, but still delivering a compelling story with real emotional weight.
By reimagining a lesser-known character, the series offers a fresh perspective, even for those already familiar with Jane Austen’s stories. Combining wit, romance, compelling characters, and a clever expansion of the classic world, The Other Bennet Sister is set to become a favorite for Austen fans and anyone who enjoys a good Regency romance.
