Director Matt Reeves recently gave fans an encouraging update about Season 2 of *The Penguin*. This spin-off series, which began after the 2022 film *The Batman*, launched on HBO on September 19, 2024. Discussions about a second season started almost immediately after the first season finale aired on November 10, 2024.
Matt Reeves says The Penguin Season 2 is being discussed
At the Emmys 2025 red carpet, Matt Reeves discussed the future of ‘The Penguin’ with Variety. When asked about a potential Season 2, Reeves said they are just starting to explore the possibility. He expressed excitement about the first season and indicated they would only move forward if they could create another season that matched or exceeded its quality, acknowledging that would be a challenge given how well the first season was received. He confirmed they are interested in continuing the show if the right conditions are met.
When asked about plans for the next season, Reeves shared that he and Lauren Lefranc, the showrunner for ‘The Penguin,’ are currently brainstorming ideas. He said they’re having conversations and will see what develops.
Reflecting on the Emmy nominations for ‘The Penguin,’ Reeves expressed his excitement, calling it “an incredible honor.” He admitted they never expected such recognition, saying it would have been “insane” to predict. Reeves also praised the cast and crew for their work on the first season, adding that while they poured their passion into the show, they couldn’t have imagined the positive reception it received.
Since its release, The Penguin has received multiple Emmy Awards, notably recognizing Cristin Milioti’s performance as Sofia Gigante (formerly Falcone) with an award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie.
During the same interview, Reeves, also an executive producer and writer on The Penguin series, revealed they thought about including Robert Pattinson’s Batman/Bruce Wayne, but decided against it in the end.
