The Penguin Season 2 & Colin Farrell’s Return Get Update From HBO Boss

There’s new news about Season 2 of The Penguin, and Colin Farrell returning as the main character. The first season, which came out two years ago, was well-received by critics and won awards, including a Golden Globe for Farrell and an Emmy for his co-star, Cristin Milioti. The show also stars Rhenzy Feliz, Deirdre O’Connell, Carmen Ejogo, Theo Rossi, and Clancy Brown.

Colin Farrell’s The Penguin Season 2 return gets update

When asked about Colin Farrell reprising his role as Oz Cobb in the second season of The Penguin, HBO’s Casey Bloys gave a vague answer, leaving his return uncertain.

In an interview with Variety about HBO Max’s plans for the U.K., Bloys said that a second season of the show, with Colin Farrell returning, is proving difficult to arrange, but everyone involved is hoping to make it happen. He admitted he doesn’t know if they’ll be able to.

News of this update follows months of talks, first mentioned by ScreenRant, about a possible second season. Bloomberg then reported a month later that a second season of The Penguin was actively being developed, along with other DC series.

I was really excited to hear that Matt Reeves – who was an executive producer on the show – mentioned last January in an interview with Happy Sad Confused that he, Colin Farrell, the showrunner Lauren LeFranc, and Dylan Clark had talked about doing another season. He made it clear, though, that it all hinged on having a really strong idea that everyone felt good about.

A month later, Farrell told Variety he wasn’t eager to return for a second season, stating he didn’t have a strong desire to do one and wasn’t particularly worried about it. He did mention he’d be willing to consider it if it could connect with Matt Reeves’ Batman movies and if the story was compelling.

He shared these feelings before in an interview with Deadline. At the time, though, he wasn’t sure about continuing the show. He said, “I’m not convinced it’s a good idea to revisit this. It’s hard to recapture the magic, and honestly, a part of me thinks we should just leave it alone. We were successful, so let’s not risk ruining it.”

Don’t expect a second season of The Penguin right away. However, you can still see Colin Farrell reprise his role as the Penguin in The Batman Part II, which is scheduled for release on October 1, 2027.
