The Outer Worlds 2 Xbox Series X Port Outperforms PS5, Says Digital Foundry

Generally, PlayStation 5 games have performed slightly better than those on Xbox Series X or S. But a new test with The Outer Worlds 2 shows the opposite: it actually runs better on Xbox than on either the PS5 or the upcoming PS5 Pro, according to Digital Foundry’s analysis.

While The Outer Worlds 2 appears similar on PS5 and Xbox Series X at first glance, a detailed look shows the PS5 version has noticeable visual issues. These include blurry images, a lower resolution, dropped frames, and screen tearing, even when prioritizing performance. Digital Foundry also observed some minor reductions in lighting quality on the PS5.

Okay, so I’ve been reading about the PS5 Pro and how it handles The Outer Worlds 2. Apparently, Sony’s upscaling tech, PSSR, just doesn’t play nice with the lighting in that game – specifically, the realistic lighting effects. What’s really frustrating is that the report says the game runs noticeably worse on the PS5 Pro compared to the Xbox Series X. We’re talking more frame rate drops, especially during tough fights. They’re even suggesting that The Outer Worlds 2 might be taking advantage of some special hardware features exclusive to the Xbox Series X|S, stuff the PS5 and PS5 Pro just don’t have. It’s a bummer, honestly, because it sounds like Xbox players are getting a smoother experience.

Obsidian Entertainment has showcased the six companions joining players in Outer Worlds 2. While you won’t be able to romance them, they can betray you if the circumstances are right. The studio also revealed a fun collectible: a “Couch-Panion” Moon Man plushie, which is currently available as a contest prize until November 16th. For those interested in limited-edition Outer Worlds 2 Xbox controllers, they’re available for purchase, but be aware that they cost more than the $70 price of the game itself.

I just saw TopMob’s review of The Outer Worlds 2, and they gave it an 8 out of 10! They said it really feels like the game is hitting its stride, with combat that lets you play how you want and a really satisfying way to level up your character and make choices. It sounds awesome!

Players who have early access will be able to start playing The Outer Worlds 2 on October 24th. Everyone else can join the adventure on October 29th, when it launches on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC. It will also be available to Game Pass Ultimate subscribers on day one.
