Similar to Fallout: New Vegas, Obsidian’s The Outer Worlds 2 puts players in difficult situations where they have to make hard choices. I often had to stop and think things through, and one decision near the beginning of the game was particularly shocking.
Once you’ve completed the initial quests, you’ll arrive at Paradise Island and eventually reach the Vox Relay Command. This is where you’ll face one of the game’s first major decisions.
Should You Choose Westport Or Farfield
Ultimately, Most Players Will Choose Westport
Once you reach the main console at the Vox Relay, you’ll face Brigadier Montelli, one of the game’s first big bosses. After you defeat them, search a nearby desk for a hidden USB drive. Plug the drive into the central console, and a secret room will open up.
You’ll discover more about the villain, de Vries, and learn they’ve hidden a self-destruct code within the message. They warn you that Fairfield will be completely destroyed unless you act. This is when you’ll face a crucial decision.
You have the option to abandon Fairfield to its fate and allow the Vox Relay to collide with it. This town is a significant hub with many characters, and importantly, it’s the first location players will encounter, making its destruction particularly impactful.
Alternatively, you can use the main control panel to send the relay to Westport, a different location just east of Fairfield. Ultimately, we decided to prioritize saving Fairfield and redirected the relay towards Westport instead.
What Happens To Westport?
It’s Ruined, But Still There
If you select Westport as the location of the crash, the town will remain largely standing, though it will suffer significant damage. Importantly, Niles’ personal questline will still be completely accessible, as the crash won’t affect his home. You can safely complete both the main Vox Relay story and Niles’ quest before moving on.
In The Outer Worlds 2, things don’t always go as planned, no matter what decisions you make. It’s best to accept setbacks, not worry too much about perfect choices, and simply enjoy the experience.
